Introduction

NZ can refer to the airline or the country - have tried to clearly distinguish between the two. Air NZ refers to the whole airline group, Air NZ, Air NZ Link (Air Nelson and Eagle Air) and Mount Cook Airlines. Except where specifically mentioned otherwise it does not refer to budget subsidiary Freedom Air (code SJ), which serves leisure routes across the Tasman and in the South Pacific.

Links to FT forums and threads are shown like this (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=409115), and links to other websites are shown like this (www.airnz.co.nz).

Daily Grab-A-Seat Sales

Each day sales on a handful of selected routes and dates are made available on both the New Zealand and Australia sites. Ex-NZ almost all sales are domestic. Sometimes Australia and South Pacific are included. To date (19 July 2007) there have been only 3 longhaul sales included. Sales normally are released early morning NZ time, but some routes may be released mid or late morning, or even in the afternoon.

Bookings

Hint - if travelling NZ domestically and its not included in international fare, then use the NZ website (www.airnz.co.nz) which will be cheaper than booking NZ domestic legs on an international website. The disadvantage of doing this is loss of some baggage allowance, and less protection in the event of misconnect to/from the international flight.

The Air NZ booking engine provides a choice of paying by credit card or with airbucks (paying by airbucks now available also on longhaul NZ flights).

This post for Air NZ Airpoints.

Background to Air NZ Airpoints

The currency of Air NZ Airpoints is Airpoints Dollars - often referred on FT as airbucks. 1 airbuck is equivalent to NZD$1, except for members residing in Australia and Norfolk Island (which uses AUD$1). Airpoints is a revenue based system, independent of distance. Earning and burning of airbucks are based on fixed amounts depending on class of travel, route and whether or not the flight is on Air NZ.

If you dont fly Air NZ at least once in the membership year, a fee is charged. The flight doesnt have to be airbucks earning to count.

If you dont either live in NZ or Australia or fly Air NZ from time to time, then Air NZ Airpoints is not for you. If you live elsewhere and dont fly Air NZ then there are better frequent flyer programs to suit most flying patterns.

Some factors to consider whether to join Air NZ Airpoints or other frequent flyer programs.
Who do you fly with? *A, OW or other. Only *A and a limited number of other partners allow earning on Air NZ Airpoints. Earning is best on Air NZ flights.
What class of paid travel? Earning on Air NZ Airpoints is quite good in first and business, but fairly poor in discount economy.
Where do you travel? As Air NZ Airpoints earning is based on routes, in some cases this earns more than other FFPs which are mileage based but in other cases this earns less. It depends on the particular routes.
What kind of awards do you want? Redemption costs less on Air NZ itineraries, and only Air NZ flights have the option of any seat redemption. Awards for point to point may be reasonable, although there are cheaper programs, but for complex routings Air NZ Airpoints is expensive (due to each segment pricing separately and added together).
Upgrade vouchers? Only 2 per year for elites. A number of restrictions but most important is can only be used on Air NZ.

Airpoints Terms and Conditions (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/airpoints_tc.htm)

Joining Air NZ Airpoints

Anyone can join Air NZ Airpoints - there are no country restrictions.

Application form (http://www.airnz.co.nz/resources/airpoints_appl_form240105.pdf) (the same form is in the inflight magazine)

Joining Air NZ Airpoints costs NZ$50 (AU$50 for Australian residents), which is waived for Koru Club members, recent business class passengers (on Air NZ and must be paid not award or upgrade), and new members being gifted a flight reward by a Gold Elite member.

Bank of NZ Global Plus is currently running a promotion for new Global Plus members which returns the NZ$50 joining fee by way of 50 airbucks.

Air NZ Airpoints Status

Air NZ Airpoints status (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/airpoints/frequent_flyer_benefits/default.htm)

Air NZ Airpoints has 4 levels
Jade - ie no status
Silver (*S) - lowest status (Star Alliance Silver), with minimal benefits
Gold (*G) - (Star Alliance Gold) meaningful benefits
Gold Elite (*G with *E on Air NZ internal systems but not on BPs or partners) - (Star Alliance Gold) top dog with Air NZ, same as *G on other *A airlines

Status is earned during a membership year - ie not based on fixed calendar. If qualify for higher status this should get picked up fairly quickly and the membership year resets (note this means a good idea to use Gold upgrade vouchers before qualify for Gold Elite). So unlike most other FFPs, qualifying for a higher status will not get rest of this year + 1 more year at the higher status.

If lose status, a soft landing applies - only fall one level at a time. So for example, qualifying for Gold Elite for the first time provides 2 years of *G status - one year as Gold Elite and a further year as Gold.

There is a 10% discount to requalify for the same status.

Airbucks needed to qualify (Australia and Norfolk Island in brackets)
Teal - none
Silver - 450 (400), 405 (360) to requalify
Gold - 900 (800), 810 (720) to requalify
Gold Elite - 1500 (1350) including 900 (800) on Air NZ, 1350 (1215) to requalify including 810 (720) on Air NZ

Status is valid until the end of the month 13 months after the start of the membership year. (Status valid period is offset by one month from qualifying period.) Eg if membership year starts in April 2005, current status is through to 30 April 2006 and the period to requalify is 1 April 2005 to 31 March 2006.

Earning Airbucks

Airbucks can be earned on Air NZ and the Star Alliance, on partner airlines (Mexicana and Virgin Atlantic) and non-airline partners.

Current hotel partners include Intercontinental (and other brands), Small Luxury Hotels of the World (Australia and NZ only), Hilton (and other brands), Langham, Millenium (and Copthorne and Kingsgate), Starwood (and other brands), Ascott/Somerset (Australia and NZ only), Mirvac (Australia and NZ only), Accor (Australia and NZ only), Stamford (Australia and NZ only), Pan Pacific.

Current credit card partners in NZ include GlobalPlus (BNZ), ASB, BNZ, Diners, Westpac, Wrightson. Note no Amex apart from GlobalPlus Amex.

Current credit card partners in Australia include ANZ, BankWest, Diners, Westpac. Note no Amex.

Current rental car partners include Hertz, Budget, Avis, Maui/Britz.

A recent change has improved the earning rate on NZ flights as part of a mixed airline itinerary. They used to have the reduced partner airline earning rates but now earn the same as fully NZ itineraries.

The following links are airbucks earning rates (excl Australia and Norfolk Island residents) for

Missing airbucks can be requested online (when signed in) for Air NZ flights only. Otherwise send in original ticket and boarding pass to Air NZ Airpoints service centre, within 6 months of flight. (Same applies to partner earning - send original of invoice within 6 months.)

Air NZ Airpoints offers (earning or redeeming) are listed here (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/airpoints/partner_offers/default.htm). See the OP for description of current deals.

Burning Airbucks

Airbucks are valid until the 5th anniversary of joining Air NZ Airpoints following earning - ie between 4 and 5 years from earning. From 17 Aug 05, for Gold and Gold Elite members, airbucks will expire on the next anniversary following the later of dropping below Gold level or 4 years after earning the airbucks. The only method to extend validity of airbucks is to attain and maintain Gold or Gold Elite status.

Rewards can be requested (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/airpoints/spending_airpoints_dollars/default.htm) online (limited to Air NZ domestic and shorthaul), by mail or fax (see back of printed statement) or by phone.

Awards are one-way, so members can pay one-way and redeem airbucks the other way, except for fares/specials that are sold as return.

Domestic (except as add-on for long haul) and shorthaul awards on Air NZ are redeemed at rate of 1 airbuck = $1 and can be booked online in the usual way, just select pay with airbucks. Taxes must be paid in cash (credit card for online). Any seat can be booked this way - there doesnt need to be any special award inventory available.

NEW Longaul awards on Air NZ can be redeemed at rate of 1 airbuck = $1 and can now be booked online in the usual way, just select pay with airbucks. Taxes must be paid in cash (credit card for online). Any seat can be booked this way - there doesnt need to be any special award inventory available. See this thread (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=544284) for more info.

Chart of cost of longhaul awards on Air NZ (no other airlines on the same itinerary) (http://www.airnz.co.nz/airpoints/spending_airpoints_dollars/flight_rewards/discounted_business_award.htm) - these are limited (in the same way as traditional FFPs limit award seats). Note that discounted longhaul economy awards are discontinued from 1 October 2005, and that Business awards do NOT apply to the new Business Premier longhaul product (presumably except where a/c is substituted post-booking).

For booking from 1 October 05, chart of cost of longhaul Business Premier awards (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/airpoints/spending_airpoints_dollars/flight_rewards/discounted_business_award.htm) - not available for Teal members unless they have current Koru Club membership.

Chart of cost of partner airline awards (incl mixed itineraries) (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/airpoints/spending_airpoints_dollars/flight_rewards/star_reward_redemption.htm)

Can gift rewards (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/airpoints/spending_airpoints_dollars/gifting.htm) to other Air NZ Airpoints members living at the same address (gifting to non members costs $25 or 25 airbucks). Note the full reward cost is used - there is no ability to transfer part of the cost (ie pooling). Gold members can also gift rewards to up to 2 others living anywhere (from 17 Aug 05), and Gold Elite members can also gift rewards to up to 4 others living anywhere (and fee is waived if they aren't Air NZ Airpoints members).

Upgrades on Air NZ (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/airpoints/spending_airpoints_dollars/upgrades.htm) can only be done with airbucks (on standby or confirmed basis for higher cost) or with Air NZ status upgrade vouchers. Airbucks cannot be used to upgrade on *A or partner airlines. *A is planning to introduce the ability to upgrade on all airlines within *A using miles (airbucks) of any *A FFP. Upgrades from economy->business premier are available, but at significantly higher cost than economy->pacific premier (economy plus).

Upgrades may be requested online or over the phone. From 17 Aug 05, standy upgrades and complimentary upgrade vouchers may be used on all fares including Smart Saver. Confirmed upgrades are not available from some booking classes. The cost of upgrading using airbucks is here (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/airpoints/spending_airpoints_dollars/upgrade_chart.htm) and here for 74R and 777 a/c (ie longhaul with new product) (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/airpoints/spending_airpoints_dollars/upgrade_chart.htm) (excl Australia and Norfolk Island).

NEW Upgrades are now available on award tickets (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?p=5167774)

Companion awards (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/airpoints/spending_airpoints_dollars/companion_chart.htm) are available on Air NZ only. (Note the chart excludes longhaul companion award service fee of $25/25 airbucks.)

Airbucks can also be used on Koru Club membership (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/airpoints/spending_airpoints_dollars/koru_club.htm), hotel nights (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/airpoints/spending_airpoints_dollars/hotels/default.htm) (Australia and NZ only) and rental cars (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/airpoints/spending_airpoints_dollars/rental_cars/default.htm) (Australia and NZ only).

Air NZ Airpoints offers (earning or redeeming) are listed here (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/airpoints/partner_offers/default.htm). See the OP for description of current deals.

[b]Miscellaneous Air NZ Airpoints Stuff

Air NZ Airpoints news (http://www.airnewzealand.co.nz/airpoints/airpoints_member_information/airpoints_news/default.htm) - no newsletter (used to be but seems to have stopped). This is the best place to find out changes in earning etc (eg discount economy on partners). Sometimes the info appears on printed statements but not always.

The J class amenities kit link goes through to a page which seems to show that NZ have adopted the SQ way of doing things - No kits as such, but everything necessary to be found in the lavs. Or am I reading it wrongly *seems likely to me.

FIRST class links are broken and can be removed. See http://publish.orcon.net.nz/f.jpg

Complimentary Upgrades are valid only while the status which gives them is active, which I don't think is clear enough.

All NZ*E upgrades are considered within 48 hours for automatic upgrade.

Gold Elite is designated as NZ*E [to all staff incl. Res] but appears as NZ*G on Boarding passes and when flying partner airlines.

A clarification added to Silver and Gold stating that Gold Elite is the only tier which can gift it's complimentary upgrades currently [I.E-NZ*S and *G cannot]

I believe a slight clarification to the status validity periods would make the system easier to understand. Explain that status is only active for 12 months but is timed so you can receive your card before you’re new status is active. So your Qualification Period and Status Valid period are offset by 1 month.

If any can get the online points claim tool to work [without getting - Sorry but we are unable to process this transaction at this time. Please try again later] I'd love to hear from you.

As posted in the news thread (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?p=4824498), there are changes to A320 trans-tasman (and presumably south pacific) service - no business class and new premium economy (note differs from long-haul premium economy).

When I get some more time I'll update the relevant posts in this thread.

Just a short note that so called confirmed upgrades are reliant on fare bucket /Z/ being available. So I guess there will not be many confirmed upgrades on NZ1/2 or many other routes

Pretty crappy rule that one, given (1) the cost difference of confirmed upgrades, and the number of people who will pay extra for YBMHU class and then not get the upgrade, until checkin.

NZ has introduced new functions for manage your bookings (http://www.airnz.co.nz/airfares_offers/manage_bookings/default.htm) and OLCI. In both cases conditions apply - seems to only work for bookings made on NZ website at this stage. I'll update the relevant post when I get a chance to.

I didn't see any reference to which booking classes apply to the Premium Economy section. It's U, E, and O (in order of descending price). Not sure on miles earning on the O class ticket - maybe others (paging Kiwi Flyer) can determine miles earning on this fare.

Not sure on miles earning on the O class ticket - maybe others (paging Kiwi Flyer) can determine miles earning on this fare. They all earn Airpoints at the Premium Economy rate. I don't know about partner FFPs.

I flew AKL-LAX-AKL in 'O' class, 105 A$ each way, due to it being a partner itinerary.

If only Smart Saver fares earned A$ though -- I'm currently doing WLG-MEL-WLG regularly, and since Smart Savers are always available, our corporate travel system forces me to buy them.... atleast I'm not on QF, I guess...

Changes to airpoints (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=850447) - not yet updated in OP.

1 November

1) Previously airbucks and status airbucks, now airbucks for redemption and status points for status.

2) Cheap fares paid with $ (not with airbucks) on domestic, tasman and pacific shorthaul earn status points, but not airbucks. These fares continue to be non-earning for other FFPs.

1 December

3) All paid Air NZ flights use the Air NZ earning chart. Previously mixed airline itineraries use the mixed airline earning chart even for Air NZ flights.

4) Substantial increase in award and upgrade costs on most routes (other than any seat redemptions).

---

There are also changes to check-in processes from 1 November.

A couple of queries re Airpoints status benefits:

1. Is the benefit of dropping from Gold Elite to Gold still applicable? I am likely to almost make Gold Elite this year & am contemplating adding a flight to make sure I reach it. One of the main reasons would be to ensure 2 years of status, so just want to check this is still currently the case.

2. Can the partner card be nominated to someone other than your actual partner (eg my son)? And does it matter if he is not an adult (he is 11)?

3. In New Zealand does the partner card provide access to the regional lounges, or just the 'main' domestic lounges (AKL, CHC, WLG, DUD)?

Thanks in advance!

1. Yes soft landing does still exist.

4.3 Gold Elite Partner
4.3.1 Gold Elite Partner membership is only available to the partner of a Gold Elite Member who resides in the same Household as the Gold Elite Member. A Gold Elite Partner must be an Airpoints Member in there own right.
4.3.2 Each Gold Elite Member is entitled to nominate one Gold Elite Partner. Gold Elite Partners are nominated by the Gold Elite Member notifying the Air New Zealand Contact Centre of the nomination or registering the nomination online at myairnz.com.
4.3.3 Gold Elite Partner privileges may only be used by the Gold Elite Partner in conjunction with services on Air New Zealand Operated Flights. Gold Elite Partner privileges are set out in airnewzealand.com/airpoints (as updated from time to time).
4.3.4 A Gold Elite Partner Card will be valid until the date 12 months after the Gold Elite Status became effective. During this period only one Gold Elite Partner can be nominated.
4.3.5 If we discover any fraudulent activities in relation to Gold Elite Partner membership, clause 12 will apply.

2. A child isn't a partner.

3. Gold elite partner has lounge access when flying Air NZ, plus 1 guest. The website is silent on whether this includes regional koru clubs.

A partner in what? I'm pretty confident that in general society conversation you and I would have the same definition, but given the arguably conceptual intent - the person you spend the most time with at home, and who most often travels around with you - there is presumably a case for at least asking Air NZ the question.

Where's Quokka when you need an opposing legal opinion? :)

Thanks for the answers. I'm glad the soft landing still exists, that has pretty much made my mind up for me re going for Golde Elite now.

Re the partner q - the reason I ask is that there is a woman at work who has a partner card that came from her Mum - which made me think that maybe as long as you have the same airpoints address Air NZ doesn't question what a "partner" is?

I guess it could be worth a shot... as long as up front about the request there can't be any issues - ie if they say no, I just accept it & let it go.

I'm sure this issue could open a can of worms in terms of the legal definition of "partner", but really it is up to NZ as to their interpretation I suppose.

After I qualify later this year I will report back on my findings...

ntddevsys
Mar 20, 09, 8:29 pm
The term is actually defined in the T&Cs -

"Gold Elite Partner" is defined as the person, living in the same household as a Gold Elite Member, who the Gold Elite Member has nominated as that Member's "Gold Elite Partner".

If I fly say Auckland-Wellington on a flexi-saver fare (a >300 km domestic journey), would I accrue $12 airpoint dollars and 12 status points or $19 airpoints dollars and 19 status points?

Rebound
Jul 19, 09, 6:28 am
AP$12 + 12 SP. Full-Flexi would give you AP$19 + 19SP
