Well I just used some of my miles to fly to SFO on March 25th. There was nothing for 25k standard awards but there was for th 50k awards. Well on US Airways.com there were no first class seats. No surprise there. Since the cabin was almost full I was put way in the back in row 21 which is an exit row.

Well I know that the seat inventory changes frequently. So I called the CP desk and asked them if there were any more isle seats closer to the front of the aircraft. She went on to tell me sure. I can give you 1C (and so on). I said to her wait a second. On US Airways.com they did not show ANY first class seats open on my flight and I had to go with coach.

She said for standard members (I am not sure if this applies to US2's and US3's) there are no more availability for first class seats. But because I was CP first class was available for me and she upgraded me. I was pleasantly surprised. She said my 50k miles is like a Y fare.

I had no idea that this could be done. She said it is like a work around. It is totally legal to do as well.

Yep. Since these award come from the Y bucket, they are upgradeable at the time of booking. This is a much better deal than a standard FC award, since you can upgrade into a bucket with better availability, and not worry about the saturday night BS. Been that way for as long as I can remember...

For CPs, they are the best deal going (no redeposit fees).

Actually, the Premium Coach award works just as well for US2's and 3's.. Ticket is booked in Y and is upgraded to P, so as long there's "P" inventory when you book, you'll be automatically upgraded. The website has done this for me both as a US1 and 2 (via the "Apply Upgrades" button after the ticket is issued).

The key here is that this is the Premium coach award (50K); not the standard first or coach one.
