Do any of the Amex cards (or V/MC) have customer service where a person picks up the phone? Diners used to have a system like that though it's recently been replaced (albeit by a relatively unobtrusive system). Still, with my SPG I have to tap in the fifteen digit # and the first 4 letters of the maiden name, etc. A real pain.
If one thing is keeping me on DC right now it's this..

I haven't called in in ages, but I used to just press '0' repeatedly as soon as the robot picked up. It would eventually transfer me to a human.
