I booked a 175K, 6 night stay over Christmas. Can you give me some feed back as to the type of room I might expect? My wife, 17 yr old son, and one of his high school buddies will accompany me, a bit crowded if we get a normal room. Depending on all your expert opinions I might book another room for a few nights to get some breathing room. I heard they have Cabana type rooms that have more space. I only stayed there once when it was a Hyatt (1991), and as a Gold Passport Diamond was given a Suite. Thank all of you in advance.

I have to say I am not impressed by this hotel... if you stayed there before, then you are aware of the type of rooms, but not impressed it is like DisneyWorld hotels in Hawaii.. nothing seems real. You would probably get an updated room with lounge access... I am not sure if you would want another room, you can always call the hotel (or email) them ahead of time to request a larger room.... Good luck...

When I stayed there two years ago, I thought that the room size was above average. I am unaware of any "cabana rooms". I would think that most of the towers have the same sized rooms. Everyone has their own tolerance of being crowded. I wouldn't count on some big suite upgrade. Figure you will get a typical room and decide if that will work for you. Christmas should be full occupancy, so there will be less upgraded rooms available.

As Diamonds, we have stayed at this hotel over Christmas on an award several times, and never were upgraded to a suite. But I have read about a few who have, it all depends on when you check in, and what is available IMHO. I did call the day before traveling and asked for a ocean view room in Ocean tower, and they did give it to us! Ocean view is considered an upgrade. There is a special lounge for Diamonds, not the best I have seen, but not the worst. I think the property is beautiful!

Diamonds are usually placed in the Ocean Tower, as that's where the Executive Lounge is. Don't expect a suite upgrade. The rooms are fairly large. Perfectly adequate, no surprises. Would be room for a cot to go with the two double beds.

Have stayed at the waikoloa several times. Rooms are average size and in need of some updating but the property is fantastic. Instead of the lounge, use your breakfast coupons they give you at check-in for their terrific breakfast buffet.
It is like Disneyland Hawaii with the train, boats, dolphins, etc but still a fun place to go with incredible views. workout room and spa is great. Eat at Roys in the King Shops down the road....Best Roys in the Islands.
Snorkeling in the lagoon you will see turtles, etc. Great lattes on site for fun walks in the morning or evening. I suggest reserving a refrigerator (use to be $5 charge per day) for your room to load up on drinks at the stores down the road.

Unless something has changed again since I was there last July, they are no longer giving out breakfast coupons. They may be available when booking specific packages that include breakfast, but they are not given out otherwise and are no longer given out when staying on the ALON2 award.

Given that HWV has only 50-some suites, the chances of getting upgraded to a suite are pretty slim. It does happen, but don't count on it.

My husband and I stayed in the Ocean Tower this January--check out my trip report. While the rooms are good sized, I think you would be cramped with two adult-sized young men in the regular rooms.

For our stay we received what I thought was a nice touch, although most might not consider it an upgrade. We were placed in a room practically right above the dolphin pool. My kids were a little younger than yours, but they very much enjoyed being able to watch the dolphins from our balcony.
