Oh FT Gods of Tech,

How can I get information on a Yahoo e-mail address (ISP, etc.)? My wife recieved a suspicious e-mail over the weekend, and suspects it came from her former employer (she and her partners are considering getting a restraining order against the person).

Check the source or headers of the message and look for the "X-originating IP", that is the IP it was sent from.

You can find out who it's assigned to (which provider) here

http://www.arin.net/whois/

and about a million other places online, do a google on lookup IP address

I don't see this in the "to" "from" "subject" etc. Is there another step to getting this info?

Thanks for the information.

It appears the e-mail was legit (although a bit strange).

Is there an IP address here because the person sent the email through Yahoo using a mail program?

I thought if you are using a web based service like yahoo or hotmail there would be no local ISP address, only the address of the web based host.
