I have Cox cable as my home ISP. It provides me with newsgroup access.

On the road, when I dial-up, I can't access the newsgroup server.

I have been using news.individual.net, which has been free, but they are starting to charge effective April 1st.

Does anyone know of any other free access newsgroup ISPs that I can use while on the road?

Not a newsfeed, but I use www.recgroups.com (www.recgroups.com ) to read the few newsgroups I read.

The guy who runs it is pretty responsive to adding new groups on request.

try http://www.forumcars.com/.

alternatively, i use teranews (http://www.teranews.com/) which requires a $3.95 one-time charge. i've been using them for a couple years now.

This may be overkill for you, but in my case I run a Linux server at home that I can access while on the road (via ssh). Not only does it allow me to read news, but I can use it for SMTP forwarding and fetching my email via POP3 even through corporate firewalls that explicitly block those ports. Many firewall admins only block the common services, leaving oddball ports wide open.

With regard to reading news, there's no problem with having to sync .newsrc files, since there's only one :)

Are you looking for real news, or just access to "binaries" (read: pron).

My, what a personal question! :D

No porn, "Not that there is anything wrong with that!".

It's for USENET access to an ASCII text based newsgroup. I signed up for Tera News at a one-time fee of $3.95. Since what I read is all text, I won't get anywhere near the limit on that account.

Thanks all for the suggestions. I did check some of the free ones that were listed, but the newsgroup I wanted to access was not amongst the offerings.

I think the idea of downloading it to your PC and accessing that remotely is the best option.

As for the binaries question, it is the difference between 100kb in news, and 100mb in news ;)

I guess google now owns the dejanews.com site which I've used in the past when looking for something. It redirects to their site.

You might take a look at:

They did that in June 2001 :)

That long? Guess it's been a while since I've used it :)
