According to this thread (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?p=3787452), the HHonors Amex is apparently adding a gas/grocery bonus similar to the longstanding Delta Amex bonus. Could the SPG version be next?
Starwood Preferred Guest - When will *wood Amex offer gas/shopping bonus?View Full Version : When will *wood Amex offer gas/shopping bonus? dhacker Mar 7, 05, 10:09 am According to this thread (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?p=3787452), the HHonors Amex is apparently adding a gas/grocery bonus similar to the longstanding Delta Amex bonus. Could the SPG version be next? slippahs Mar 7, 05, 12:48 pm I'd sure hope so, but it seems like SPG values their points more so than HHonors. Perhaps when all the SPG/HHonors AMEX holders start switching all their spending on their HHonors AMEX, SPG will do something to compensate. JohnnyP Mar 7, 05, 1:32 pm The United MileagePlus VISA has also been offering double miles on gas/grocery/restaurant-type purchases over a certain threshold ($150 for me, but probably different for other customers). As a result, I have been putting almost all my expenses on the VISA instead of my SPG AMEX. Wish they would follow suit. yyy Mar 7, 05, 1:40 pm I use my *wood Amex whenever possible, except for gas. With my Chase freedom card, I get 5% credit on gas purcahse towards my next billing cycle. If there is additional bonus on *wood, I will switch for sure! bhatnasx Mar 7, 05, 2:23 pm I use my *wood Amex whenever possible, except for gas. With my Chase freedom card, I get 5% credit on gas purcahse towards my next billing cycle. If there is additional bonus on *wood, I will switch for sure! You and I have the exact same spending habits - the cool thing about the Chase Freedom card is it codes convenience stores as gas stations too, so an extra 5% off those purchases is always nice. gleff Mar 7, 05, 2:51 pm What's interesting is that the HHonors card explicitly offers Gold status @ $20k annual spend. Unofficially there are reports on FT that they offer Diamon @ $50k annual spend on the card. If it were made official I'd divert 50k in spend to that card in a heartbeat. SPG offers "Preferred Plus" to Amex cardholders, and HHonors offers Silver to Amex or Hilton Visa cardholders. I'm surprised, with as easily as they give out gold, that they don't make that one benefit at a specific spend threshold. It would be controversial here for sure, but it could be quite a play for them to offer SPG Platinum based on credit card spend, perhaps at the $100k threshold or even $150k. MileKing Mar 7, 05, 3:02 pm Looks like non-points/miles credit cards are taking over. I previously used Starwood AMEX for everything, but over the past year that card has been seeing minimal charges. It drives Mrs. MileKing crazy trying to remember which card to use in what situation, but here is what we have: Gas - AAA VISA (5% back on all gas purchases; limit is something like $60 per day in fuel charges) Supermarkets/drug stores - Citibank Dividend Select MC (5% back up to $300 per year) Fast food/United charges/anywhere AMEX not accepted - United VISA (double miles on fast food and United purchases) HHonors hotel charges and soon, all dining establishments except fast food - HHonors AMEX (5 HHonors pts/$) Everything else, if there is anything left - Starwood AMEX gleff Mar 7, 05, 3:33 pm Fast food/United charges/anywhere AMEX not accepted - United VISA (double miles on fast food and United purchases)Just shows how these kinds of promos have staying power with consumers, IIRC the UA Visa triple miles on fast food purchases ended 11/30/04. Wasn't aware that there was an ongoing promo for double miles? Double miles on fast food purchases are good thru end of year (2005). gleff Mar 7, 05, 5:17 pm Double miles on fast food purchases are good thru end of year (2005). Well whaddaya know (http://mileageplusvisa.ualmiles.com/TermsAndConditions.jsp#TC2)! I had stopped using my United Visa at fast food restaurants after the triple miles promo expired 11/30. Will have to switch back... daveland Mar 7, 05, 11:38 pm Count me in as another hoping that *wood Gold/Plat becomes a spending threshold benefit of the *wood AMEX. I currently use the *wood AMEX for most everything but have been very tempted by the no-fee Merrill + for the 4 free Ritz nights as well as now the Hilton AMEX for the free Gold and potential Diamond. I know I'm not alone........ I hope they make some changes before too many people shift cards. honu Mar 13, 05, 5:11 am I know I'm getting really OT, but does anyone know if the MP VISA fast food promo is valid at Subways? gleff Mar 13, 05, 5:33 am I know I'm getting really OT, but does anyone know if the MP VISA fast food promo is valid at Subways? I'd be surprised if it wasn't -- they advertise Quiznos as explicitly earning double miles. |
