Indeed ! Did not see this anywhere else though - is this so irrelevant to QF that they did not bother to put out a press release on it ?!?

And on a similar note, does a codeshare of Qantas and Air Malta mean the flight coulf be considered a Maltese Cross?

Good to see you managed to get it back on topic. And here was me thinking we were discussing an Italian milkshake :p .

This may be better news than you first imagined. Malta can be a source of low fares.

Back on topic, if anyone has been following the ex-TIP discussion over on the BA board, Air Malta just so happens to be one of the least costly ways of getting a one-way to TIP (via MLA). At last glance, even the cost of J was a relative steal...

Anyone know what the steer is on points / SCs for the codeshare, whether the LHR-MLA leg can be booked without a flight originating from SYD/MEL or indeed whether FF points can be redeemed for this route?

I've emailed customer care for some clarification and will post when I hear back.

er , yes of course you can earn plenty of KM points, but why would you want to?
Of course you can book the LHRMLA leg without a leg from Australia, that's what they're there for.
Of course you can redeem QF FF points for this route just as you have always been able to using BA LONMLA, and then perhaps with all those KM points earned on above on KM too!

Why would QF have put out a press release? This is about Air Malta marketing a new route, by code share, not about QF doing anything at all.

Sorry perhaps I'm not being clear: I'm talking about booking LHR-MLA op by Air Malta under a QF designator, thus making it eligible to earn Qantas frequent flyer points. For example, there's a QF codeshare from LHR/TXL op by BA but, aside from award bookings, this can't be ticketed under a QF designator in isolation of an adjoining QF long haul flight. Also, QF FF points are earned on AZ flights (as well as other non-OW partners) but not SCs. Follow me now?

Yes but there is no news that Qantas is doing anything with the Malta route. This thread is about Air Malta activity and perhaps belongs in the other European airlines forum, not here.

Well that is what we want to know. Is there any benefit for QF FFs ?

If booked on the QF flight number, a QF FF member will earn:
1307 QF FF base points plus any cabin and status bonuses
SC's according to fare paid (ie currently 60SC for J, 20 SC for discount Y)

This is the same for all QF flight numbers (YMMV according to route of course). However, since it is operated by a non-OneWorld airline, you cannot use this flight as part of a OneWorld Explorer or OneWorld Global Explorer fare. This flight booked on the QF code is likely to be limited to itineraries that include arrival/departure to/from LHR on Qantas coded flight as is the case with most codeshare sales.

Air Malta is not a QF FF partner airline, so you cannot earn QF FF points if flying on Air Malta flight numbers. And you cannot redeem QF FF points for flights on Air Mlata flights. There is no mention anywhere as to whether or not QF will allow QF FF redemptions on their QF code on these LHR-MLA flights, but I would expect they will not be available.

...  ...what "QF flight no". what "QF code on these LHR-MLA flights"?? ...I don't believe there is any such thing. This changes nothing for QF FF, who for earning or redemption would continue with the QF/BA arrangement.

This thread belongs in other European airlines, as it is just confusing people here.

Yes, it's a 'one-way' code share with some QF1, QF2 & QF434 seats being sold with KM codes.Air Malta and Qantas Airways have signed a historic codeshare agreement that will link Malta and Australia via London Heathrow. From 18 July 2005 Air Malta will place its code on Qantas’s daily London flights to/from Sydney and Melbourne. Still, sort of interesting from Oz viewpoint.

Sorry, I was reading it backwards. This is Air Malta (KM) flight number of QF operated QF1/2 services. Scratch what I said above. Nothing in it for QF FF's. For some reason my grey matter was thinking it was QF code on KM metal LHR-MLA, but that is not what was announced.

Out of topic here, Singapore Airlines flew to Malta briefly in late 80s. Flight times were scheduled to connect Australian flight, I believe.
