American Express Membership Rewards - Charge junk food to the Card, get bonus points

I got a card in the mail today. From March 1st, through April 30th you get 5 MR points for each dollar spent (minumum $5) with a maximum of 500 bonus points at fast food restaurants. I'm not sure how they determine what a fast food restaurant is. There is no registration required apparently.

The fine print doesn't say US only, but I expect it is just that. The fine print also advises us that not all fast food restaurants accept Amex. :D

Thanks for posting this.

Do purchases under $5 continue to earn the standard 1 point per dollar?

Sure, any purchase with the card earns one point for each dollar charged.

Looks Like it is time to stock op on the Mickey D's certs again and reap not only to 5 points per $ but Upromise $ as well (double 6% as a AOL member)
so $100 in McDonalds Certificates = 500 MR Points (or 1000 hilton points thru AA or HA) Plus $6 in upromise!!

Thanks!

Too bad In-n-Out is cash only and won't accept credit cards.. or else I'd atually try this (I dont think I've stepped foot in a fast food restaurant since I was a little kid -- except for In-n-Out which is in a class of its own)

I don't eat fast food fare either but I would if I was homeless. One can always buy the McDonald's gift certificates and give them to homeless panhandlers instead of spare change.

of course you will need all those extra miles to get the upgrade to larger seats! :D
In out burger is very good but when in LA the only place to fast food is fatburger.

I would agree. In-n-out is the best. Very cheap, very good taste.

The Salads at McDonalds are quite good (Grilled Chicken, Newman's Own dressings) these days and the McGriddles are a family favorite as well

I'm not sure how they determine what a fast food restaurant is.

I would think that Amex will designate transactions with merchant category code (MCC) of 5814 as fast food.

Great promo! Unfortunately the only "traditional" fast food restaurants that consistently accept Amex are McDonald's and Wendys, neither of which I'm big fans of.

Does anyone know if the trendier (and better) quick-service restaurants such as Quizno's Sub, Panera Bread, and Chipotle are under merchant code 5814 and thus qualify for the promo?

Does this promo count for Delta AMEX cards earning SkyMiles or just Membership Rewards?
