Transfer MR points to CO or DL. Redeem for NW flights.
Transfer MR -> SPG -> NW. Redeem.
Transfer MR -> SPG -> NW. Redeem.

Whoever told you that meant that you couldn't transfer your points to NWA. You can certainly redeem them there. The best choice of programme to do that depends on where you are located. For example, Alitalia is your best bet if you're located in the UK, thanks to the 3:2 redemption ratio and relatively cheap awards.
