Has anyone stayed long term in Vegas? ...interested in a month's stay
in Dec2005/Jan2006 - would, of course, prefer something with a kitchen or mini-kitchen, but would consider anything - thanks

I believe there is a Residence Inn across the street from the convention center. December is one of the least expensive months to be in Vegas. Many of the shows close for a couple of weeks and most of the top hotels rent rooms for less than $50.00 per night.

If you want to stay in one place for the month I would try the Residence and places well away from the strip. If you are going to be a tourist I would try to stay at Bellagio, Venetian and other main strip locations for a bargain.

I entirely agree with the above; sign up for some of the promotional emails from the major Strip resorts and you will be surprised by the deals you can get.

Check www.travelaxe.com for deals as well.

I just had a few days at the Hilton Grand Vacations Club on the Las Vegas Strip; this is a new (one year) property, an the strip, opposite Sahara. But great links (monorail, bus, car and of course on foot) to the main drag.

I had a studio room booked online via hilton.com for just $76/night, the one bedroom suites would give you all the conveniences of home for a fraction of the cost of a hotel suite; and they have free laundry facilities, WiFi, DVD players and CD players and coffee making facilities/kitchenettes in the room all the comforts of home the major Strip hotels lack.

If you'll have a car and you don't need to be on the Strip, consider the Residence Inn at Green Valley - it's about 6 miles from the strip, standard lo-rise, full kitchens, free parking-outside-your-door layout. Free highspeed internet access, a supermarlet across the street and (best of all) a Trader Joe's one block away :p ^

Thanks, everybody for the suggestions.

I found that Embassy Suites Convention Center, on Paradise, where we have stayed before, had a great deal.

I booked a room for Dec. 14 - Jan. 30th for $1659 total! They are charging me $84.55 per night (AARP rate) through Jan. 1st, with the rest of the nights free! Our stay will be in a true suite with wet bar, coffeemaker, microwave and fridge, and the suites have pretty bathrooms. They even have small (tiny) balconies, and Embassy always includes in the pricing hot breakfasts daily and afternoon cocktail receptions (weekdays). The indoor pool will also come in handy in Dec.-Jan. :)

I also found a condo for just a tad more, but it is located about a mile from the Orleans, making it a little more difficult to get around town - so I booked Embassy.

thanks again for the help

Sounds like a great deal!

Good choice to skip the condo. My son lived about a mile from the Orleans, just off decatur, and moved because the break-ins to cars in his complex were up and the neighborhood was changing.

OOH - thanks for letting me know - might have booked it in the future!

If you are going to have long stays in Vegas frequently I would suggest on your next visit you spend some time finding some neighborhoods you'll be comfortable in. Staying right near the strip may become tiring unless your business requires you to be that close to all the crowds and traffic. At least December will be a slow period for the convention senter. Personally I avoid the entire strip area completely most trips.

I like the Henderson area - Green Valley Ranch & Sunset Station are there. Nice neighborhoods surround them. I don't know if any of Henderson area apartments offer short term leases there. From what I've found the places that offer short term leases are not in the best areas.

The first apartment that my son rented required no proof of employment or other credit - just a larger security deposit and a surcharge in the rent. This was the place on Decatur between Trop and Flamingo! They recently re-habbed them into Condo's. Perfect for a recent law school grad without a job - but also perfect for others that don't have jobs that can be discussed here.

$35 a night is a great deal. You know not to rent a car in Las Vegas, right?

Why would you not rent a car in Vegas?

TAXES, more taxes, then more taxes. It would be a killer on an exteded stay.

To clarify, the car-rental taxes are indeed horrendous but are only assessed at the airport. If you rent a car at any non-airport location the taxes are much less.

Already booked a car - it will cost me $588. for 30 days for a mid size with Thrifty - taxes and all. Oh, and I have a ten percent off coupon which will save me about $40 bucks.

What I usually do is book my car and hotel early, and then check as the dates get closer - sometimes that saves me money, as well.

Why would you not rent a car in Vegas?

Before moving here, I would rent a car when visiting. Cab fares can really add up, and valet parking is usually free. Las Vegas is a pretty easy city to get around in, and traffic isn't that bad. Renting a car allows you to see off Strip stuff like Hoover Dam or Fremont Street Experience. IMO, unless you're coming for a convention and will be stuck in the same place for your trip, renting a car in Vegas is usually a good move.
