Luxury Hotels - Hotels in Nice, FranceView Full Version : Hotels in Nice, France stevemason Feb 17, 05, 6:38 am Does anyone have any ratings or recommendations for either the Negresco, Westminster Hotel or the West End (seaview) Hotel in Nice, France? Raffles Feb 17, 05, 7:47 am The only genuine luxury hotel in Nice is the brand new Palais de la Mediterranee. Take a look at the reviews on tripadvisor.com if you need any further proof - ALL of the eight reviews that come up on the first page give it 5/5. This is almost unheard of on tripadvisor.com. Do pop into the Negresco for a look round, however, if only to see the chandelier and the modern art. Amex offer good discounts at the Palais if you have a Plat card and book on the FHR programme. For boutique hotels, you can't beat La Perouse although many of the rooms are small. Both of these hotels have fantastic sea views and are perfectly situated. TRAVELSIG Feb 17, 05, 8:27 am Negresco is nice for a drink- but don't stay there. jeffreyt Feb 17, 05, 9:41 pm Are you staying in Nice because You HAVE to stay in Nice?? Are you on vacation or business? obscure2k Feb 17, 05, 9:59 pm You really don't want to stay at The Negresco. I do have to say, though, that walking is pretty great from that hotel. Lots of local flavor and markets within walking distance. However, the Negresco is :td: stevemason Feb 18, 05, 6:54 am Are you staying in Nice because You HAVE to stay in Nice?? Are you on vacation or business? We are on vacation. We will be there for 12 days. Any suggestions on what to do or where to go? Raffles Feb 18, 05, 7:32 am Nice is a decent place to stay, although 12 days is too much. There is a new Four Seasons resort in Provence you should move to after 4-5 days on the coast. Nice is exceptionally convenient for Antibes and Monte Carlo plus all the small villages in between, most of which are reachable by train. Cannes is also not too far away by rail. Even Genoa in Italy is doable at a push. In Nice, the Mattisse, Chagall and Modern Art museums are well worth a visit. Villa Rothschild is also worth a look in season - lovely garden, lovely location. daph Feb 18, 05, 1:30 pm If you can get a view balcony at La Perouse it's heaven on earth. The restaurant isn't that great but the breakfast is nice. We stayed in Beaulieu sur Mer but not at the Metropole Hotel which is lovely, with a sea view and very good food. It's a pleasant walk to St Jean Cap Ferrat. If you have the bucks you can stay at the Grand Hotel du Cap at the tip. It's really posh-the bar has photos of celebrated visitors such as Bush 41 and 43, Cliinton and Elizabeth Taylor [not together]. Non-NonRev Feb 18, 05, 8:27 pm If you do have a car, the Hotel du Cap Eden Roc in Cap d'Antibes is very close to Nice, Cannes and the business complex at Sophia Antipolis. The Picasso Museum in Antibes is worth a visit, and there are good restaurants in Antibes and Juan les Pins: http://www.edenroc-hotel.fr/ jeffreyt Feb 19, 05, 10:50 am I highly recommend La Reserve de Beaulieu in Beaulieu sur Mer, east of Nice. It's not to far from EZE (another place I would highly recommend staying). At La Reserve, almost every major star you can think of has stayed there and when you stay there, you understand why. http://reservebeaulieu.com/uk/navigation.htm see also: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=304706 TMOTEE Feb 20, 05, 9:21 am I would suggest the Royal Riviera in Cap Ferrat. A great hotel with a wonderful garden and pool area. Been there past 2 years for a week each time and had a wonderful stay. Restaurant is top notch. Website is www.royal-rivera.com RTWSTARALLIANCE Feb 20, 05, 2:44 pm We stayed at the Negresco as members of the Leaders Club part of Leading Hotels. At first given a small dump room. Upgraded to a larger room looking out onto the water. I will never ever forget that room. It had a bathtub and toilet seat which had been sprayed with 60's stuff they would spray onto dune buggys. Red with gold flecks. The Hotel has a decent location but way past its time. A definite pass. We had just come from the Hotel d Paris in Monaco and we were ready to head back. Pass. gbg Feb 21, 05, 12:53 pm Well, I stayed five days at westminster one year ago. Negresco was fully booked at that time. The westminster is a nice hotel with a nice price. It's very well located and the rooms are comfy... I had a pleasant stay, the hotel just filled my needs. I guess 12 days on cote d'azur will be a lot. Nice, Cannes and Marseille are large cities but there is not much to do there. Don't miss Monaco, especially if you are a car nut like I am. billycwhatup Feb 23, 05, 2:36 pm I lived in Villefranche-sur-Mer as a student for a year - absolutely beautiful. While neither Villefranche nor Beulieu really have luxury hotels, they're both great places to take the train to and have a meal or two on the water. Same for St. Jean Cap Ferrat, which of course has the Grand Hotel. Even if you're not staying there, both the hotel and town are worth visiting. fisherman Feb 23, 05, 5:29 pm I'll second the recommendation on the Hotel du Cap Eden Roc in Antibes. While we didn't find it overly luxurious, we did enjoy the peace and surroundings. The service was absolutely excellent. It's a bit odd in a few ways- a bit full of itself really (hence the celebrities link on the home page). Additionally, you must pay in cash or wire transfer. Definitely a unique experience and extremely relaxing, though. brendamc Feb 24, 05, 11:44 pm As others have said, Cap Ferrat is wonderful - I actually prefer the Voile d'Or to the Grand Hotel du Cap - their rooms have balconies & the ones on the left hand corner facing the water have balconies on both sides with views of the harbor and the corniches & the Med - just incredible! Also like the restaurant & not feeling so isolated as at the Grand. Just my opinion. aku Feb 26, 05, 12:57 am Everyone has his/her own tastes--I never cared much for Nice or Cannes, other than shopping the pedestrian mall. Two suggestions for other towns: Juan les Pins (much better beaches), St. Paul de Vence (discover why for yourself). Dorlee May 26, 05, 6:21 am The only genuine luxury hotel in Nice is the brand new Palais de la Mediterranee. Take a look at the reviews on tripadvisor.com if you need any further proof - ALL of the eight reviews that come up on the first page give it 5/5. This is almost unheard of on tripadvisor.com. I will be staying here in a few days, and wanted to know approximately how long a taxi ride it is from the NCE airport, and what it would cost. Raffles May 26, 05, 6:30 am Nice cabbies will rob you blind - but legally. The fare from the airport to the hotel is about Euro 30 if I remember correctly. This is depite the fact that it is, at max, a 10 minute drive. This fare is in line with what the guide books suggest. PS. Ironically, after everyone on tripadvisor gave this hotel five stars, I was the one that broke the mould and gave it four, due to the terrible breakfast service. If they are going to serve breakfast in the conference suite / ballroom instead of the restaurant (and as its a public holiday weekend in much of Europe the hotel will be full and they probably will) then have room service breakfast instead. Apart from that, thought, the hotel is still highly recommended. Dorlee May 26, 05, 7:07 am Thanks for the information RJB . A dear French friend is driving down from Biot to take us to breakfast and have a visit with us before we leave for Monte Carlo to board a cruise. We are planning to have dinner at the hotel, though, because airport arrival times can be so uncertain, and we will have had long travel times from U.S. Did you happen to eat dinner at their restaurant? Raffles May 26, 05, 7:21 am Did you happen to eat dinner at their restaurant? No, but only because we were never in the mood for a 'serious' starched tablecloth meal in what I think the hotel hopes will become a Michelin-starred restaurant. The bistro did us a good meal on the night we ate there. Oddly, you can't get to it from the hotel - you need to walk out of the lobby into the street and then back into the bistro. It is linked to the hotel's casino, and has very brightly coloured walls based on Matisse paintings. Dorlee Jun 19, 05, 9:06 am We dined at the restaurant, Le Padouk, at the Palais de la Mediterranee. We all chose the tasting menu, "Parfum d'Azur". It was one of the best meals of our trip, including a Michelin two star in Bordeaux, and a three star in Paris. I get hungry all over again just thinking about it! |
