Heres the response to my online feedback to the Hertz Gold folks yesterday regarding the surcharge.
Please accept our apology for the information you received. At this time, Hertz has made a decision to postpone the Reservation Process Fee of $2.50 indefinitely.

It seems that all our whining and *****ing worked (at least temporarily).

My email...
I understand that there is some talk of a hold on implimenting the 2.50$ surcharge for ALL reservations. I am encouraging you to continue to rethink your business strategy of implementing a fee that is essentially hidden to maintain the appearance of a lower rental cost. Charging a surcharge for ALL customers essentially is raising your rates without raising your rates. I understand that doing business is difficult, but being deceptive is unethical.
If you limit the reservation surcharge to those that use travel agents, phone agents, or through 3rd party websites (as it is encoraging your users to book through you directly), this may be acceptable. I hope that you will either abandon the reservation surcharge or at minimum not charge the surcharge to those that book directly through the website.
