US Airways Dividend Miles (Pre-FlightFund Merger) - Upgraded as a companion

I am Gold Preferred and am flying this week on a hub-to-hub route with a co-worker who is Chairman's Preferred. The CP desk messed up and didn't link my PNR to hers, so her upgrade came though but I am waitlisted and probably won't get the upgrade. She called the CP desk to re-request that our PNRs be linked and so that I would get the upgrade, but the CP desk said that they'd have to then waitlist both of us (although the flight is less than 7 days away, within the CP window). Is this correct? I thought that the CP desk could just give me a FC seat since it's within the 7 day window.

If anybody's successfully upgraded with a similar experience, I'd really appreciate any advice. Thanks.

This sounds correct. If you were not on the PNR as the CP companion at the 7-day window the only way to add you is to remove the CP and by telling you that you would both be waitlisted they are telling you that there are no more seats in the "E" bucket. I've had this happend to me before when I called to add someone as a companion and was told by the CP desk to wait until the 7-day window because I would move down on the list and probably wouldn't get the upgrade. This way at least I got the F seat and if there were still "E" seats at the 7-day window I could add the companion before the US2 window of 3 days. Hope that helps.
