The last time I flew Envoy class to LGW they gave us a complimentary first-class ticket on the Gatwick Express train to London.

Is that still being offered? (I have a guess... but I'd be glad to be surprised...)

Not on my last flight Sept 2004. Only a pass for express customs line.

This was for PAID business fares. They may still be doing this. It can't hurt to ask at the Arrivals Lounge (some of the nicest US employees I have ever encountered). ^

Do upgraded or award Envoy get arrivals access?

Yes, Upgraded awards have access to the arrivals lounge--it's why I'm willing to spend the miles to UG to go east to London. Big seats for sleeping and a hot shower upon landing.

Only PAID Envoy tickets get Gatwick Express passes. FC on Gatwick is very cheap still--I always use it. AND...walk past the four or five "train ticket" booths and go straight on board. You can buy from the conductor with a credit card and there's no extra charge or fee.

In the distant and mythic past of US Airways Envoy Class, the days of salad carts, nuts in ramikins, Godiva chocolates, flowers in the loo, - arriving LGW passengers were offered a chauffer driven sedan into central London - on any paid Envoy fare - I scored a $1360 roundtrip fare one winter - the highlight of my US Airways adventures.

They still did offer a car service as of 2002 the last time I flew US to LGW.

I used an 80,000 mile award ticket in Envoy to LGW and used the Arrivals Lounge, where they gave me a free First Class ticket on the Gatwick Express. The agent told me that if I was upgraded with a SWU I would NOT have received this. Since I was on a mileage-deduct award or upgrade, I was entitled to the train. The car service is offered to paid passengers only.

Seems like there are two pieces of good advice here.

1. Check with the Arrivals Lounge folks in LGW for a Gatwick Express ticket. ^

2. Don't buy a ticket at the kiosks, buy one on the train... *if* the conductor comes around and asks/offers. :o

That is really true in my case, last year 4 of us were traveling together and the conductor said the special was 4 tickets for the price of 2.

I think that when I was there this summer they had a sign in the arrivals lounge (a jewel in the US system) that said upgraded passengers got nothing for London transport, award tickets got Gatwick Express tickets and paid Envoy had a choice of Gatwick Express or a car to London. I agree about paying a little more for a first class ticket on the Express. It isnt crowded and is a very comfortable trip.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I'm traveling on a mileage award so it sounds like I may score a Gatwick Express ticket. Cool. And the arrivals lounge wasn't there the last time I traveled, so I'm looking forward to the shower...

Wow! I take this flight all the time usually in Envoy and have never heard of getting a free Gatwick Express ticket. It seems like the verdict is yes for award tickets and no for coupon upgrades. But what about milage upgrades? Anyone have luck there?

btw, "ditto" on the first class train advice. If you happen to get on a crowded train the last thing you want to do after a transatlantic flight and the harrowing experience of the LGW baggage claim area is struggle to find somewhere to stuff your bag on the train. If the train is crowded I head directly to the FC section. If it's not crowded and the baggage bins are empty, coach is fine.

Based on my experience, mileage and coupon upgrades are the same, that is no go on the tickets for the train.

I always buy ticket on the net. you get a code to give to the conductor.

Another benefit is that they have sent me upgrades to first class to my e-mail a couple of times and other special offers.

They are flexable for use from the day of purchase for up to 30 days after the date of travel you have booked in both directions.

The 3 or 4 for 2 offer can be booked in advance as well.
