I cannot vouch for this at all, but I found it as we are researching renting a motorhome.... It probably won't help us as we have to plan far out, but if you can plan last minute, or, more last minute, it might be worthwhile...

It's a pretty good way to get around. I drove from Melbourne to Adelaide in a Toyota 4WD with camping gear in the back, and then Adelaide to Darwin in a small campervan. Both were almost brand new. However, this was off-season (August 1999) when the company (Britz) needed to pre-place its vehicles for the coming summer. Also, the insurance is extra, and was $5/day. The time and mileage limits allowed modest detours, including a side trip to Uluru and Ayer's Rock. My big mistake was trusting my travel companions to pick up the minivan without me. They misunderstood the time limit, so we arrived in Darwin a day late (actually only an hour after closing time, so we had to wait for morning). This led to our forfeiting the $500 deposit. Even with this snafu, it was a pretty good deal, and if you actually read the contract unlike me  it's a great way to get around.

NNH!! How did you hear about it at the time???
You are the person that I need to talk to (or, one of them) have you seen my proposed itinerary driving from Melbourne to Kangaroo Island & then Adelaide to Alice Springs?? I am taking all recommendations & suggestions to heart... it's under the Northern territory thread...
Any advice is welcome.... we are traveling during peak season however, so I doubt these campervan deals will be available to us... we are lucky, the 14 day 4 berth deluxe is only costing us 2250.00 usd :( That's more than enough thank you!
Hi Chris
I'll take a look at the thread as soon as I can. I heard about the relocation deal because it was on the noticeboard of a hostel in Melbourne, so I gave them a call, collected some fellow travellers, and hit the road!

Wow! You were at the right place at the right time.... Who did you call in order to reserve the home? Did you call Britz directly? Or, did you contact an outside company?

I know in NZ many rental campers and cars have specials to relocate. However the ones I have seen all very short term rental (ie only a day or two) and only come up at short notice depending on where their vehicles are.
Having said that, some routes are quite likely (eg Wellington to Auckland due to many tourists travelling in opposite direction and not wanting to take it over the ferry which costs $$$).
I guess it may be similar in Australia.
Hmm... It was 5 years ago so I'm a little hazy, but I think it was just a question of phoning the local office and asking if they had anything to relocate. Both times, they said yes, and told us what vehicle and destination they had. It's not something you can book ahead more than a day or two, mind you.
