"SOUTH African Airways (SAA) has suspended four high-ranking officials on allegations of misconduct and gross negligence in the performance of their duties.
CEO Khaya Ngqula last week identified the 602-strong management team as another big cost to the company. He said the number needed to be cut by half.
It is not yet clear if the suspended officials will be among those who opt for SAA's enhanced voluntary packages.
The suspended officials are vice-president for finance Mark Shelly; head of procurement Dick du Plessis; vice-president of legal affairs Happy Masondo; and Masondo's deputy Sesi Baloyi.
Sources said that Shelly was suspended for allegedly failing to take "effective and appropriate steps to prevent fruitless and wasteful expenditure" of the company's money by issuing Diners Club International Corporate Cards without the approval of the authorised signatories.
Transactions worth R36m, plus interest of more than R662000 due to late payments, were not properly and satisfactorily accounted for between April 2001 and June last year, the sources, who declined to be named, said.
Shelly allegedly also failed to ensure the company cards were returned and cancelled when their users left the airline.
Du Plessis was allegedly suspended for concluding procurement contracts without authority.
Baloyi was suspended for allegedly not disclosing her relationship with her husband, advocate Lengane, who rendered legal services to SAA.
Masondo was suspended for allegedly interfering with investigations into Baloyi's case.
The suspended officials could not be reached for comment.
But SAA spokesman Onkgopotse Tabane confirmed the suspensions. But he declined to give details, saying that the matter was still sub judice."
