(I was going to submit a complaint via the SPG website, but it's down, so here first. When it costs USD 1/minute to make phone calls, it's a pain to deal with support issues such as these over the phone)
I was flying HKG-DXB a couple days ago, and got into BKK in the very early morning, to leave the following day in the very early morning.
I went to SGS, expecting to check my bags with the bellhop and go out until my room was ready.
The guy at the front desk offered to let me check in early, which was excellent -- since I was leaving at the same time 24 hours later, I assumed it meant early checkin. The checkin slip (and my reservation) very clearly said 05 Feb 2005 to 06 Feb 2005.
Despite by DND I had a phone call (for "maid service") and some manager + bar stocker ring my doorbell at around 1100h on 5 Feb, too. Sigh. I really need to get a door hanger sign custom printed which clearly communicates "DO NOT DISTURB" in multiple languages, and perhaps a pictogram of someone knocking and a skull and crossbones.
When I went to check out 24 hours later, I saw they had listed my arrival as 02:46 4 Feb, not 02:46 5 Feb, and departure as 01:00 6 Feb (which was correct). And thus charged an extra night (at USD 180 + tax + service)
I was in a hurry to get my cab to the airport, so didn't spend more than a few minutes discussing this with the front desk guy.
How do I go about dealing with this through the hotel? I'd view listing my checkin as being on 4 Feb as either an honest mistake or outright fraud. If they want to charge me for an extra night for 0300-1200h on 5 Feb, that's technically possible, and will only guarantee I never stay in a Starwood BKK property again.
As it is now, if it's not corrected, I will have to contact my credit card issuer and Thai authorities; claiming I was checked in at the hotel on a day which I was in Hong Kong is pretty low.
I'm curious if there's some flag in my account which says "try to get rid of this customer", since every single starwood stay in the past 3 weeks has been flawed in some substantial way. If so, the program is quite efficient.
On another note, visiting Thailand during elections is a really bad idea; with alcohol sales prohibited, the cocktails included, bars, clubs, etc. are all gone, and there was actually nothing to do but sit in my room and work on the Internet. I didn't get a corner room, and got a moderately low floor (2403), but it was still pretty nice.
