doctor, I received this promo in Jan and have had two stays count towards the promo. I'm not sure how to calculate the points but here are the results on my account:
Hotel: 4 Points Allentown
Price: $82 per night
I can't figure it out, seems like it's Quadruple of the base points not Triple but I'll take whatever points I can get. :)

It should really be 164 X 3 = 492, or three times the base points.
Lurker,
In addition to the 492 points are you entitled to 82 SPG Elite points as a Platinum?

In sales a company tries to get new business. But, to focus on getting the new business and letting your existing business go out the back door, is a mistake often made. SPG is headed down this path.
Also, times have changed! With the internet no longer can a company offer a promo secretly letting only a few in on it. Those days are gone for good.

Ignorance is bliss.
Chances are, you're probably being passed over for TONS of promos. Do you know for certain? Will you ever know? Yet, somehow.. you make it through the day.
Why people regard a lack of promos as a personal attack is beyond me.

Can't help with the promotions budget, but as a public company, it's easy to look up Starwood's fiscal year. The new one starts Jan 1, 2006.
BTW, earnings for the 12/31/04 year were announced yesterday.

William,
I apologize for being dumb, but I still can't figure out the triple points are calculated. I just had a stay where my
base points - 2400 (I'm PLT)
Bonus points - 1200
Triple points - 4800 (they posted this morning in a sweep)
Now if it was triple what I charged ($1200) then it would be 3600.
But if it is triple the base (2x what I charge) 2400 - then it should be 7200.
But I can't figure how they got 4800. Please explain in detail. It's Saturday and my brain is in weekend mode. Thanks

You are correct - triple the base is 7200. You initially received 2400, so the 4800 brings you to that 7200.
If they added triple the amount after already crediting the base amount, that would be a quadrupling.

Surely you jest? :)
I maxed on the Marriot 5000/3 stays in late Dec., so now I'm hopping around accumulating points and stays for next year's status. The Columbus Renaissance has the 2,000 pt. bonus that ends this week, alternating nights with the Westin to get the stay credit towards 25 and 500 pts, tossing in a few Sheraton Suite's and Marriott NW - it's making up for driving to the project site and having airline mile withdrawal.

I've had some interesting promotions, including stay 3 nights in Atlanta, for 5000 points, etc. I fly to Atlanta quite a bit, so I used this one often. Haven't seen many other promotions except from this same Atlanta hotel.
I suspect that when they see by your profile, you don't fly much in the spring, then they send you offers like the triple points until March? If you don't buy dinners or room service, they offer you 2 for 1 dinners or something.
Welcome to "CRM" and targeted marketing. I suspect if every time I go to a Starwood property I used TurboNet, they wouldn't send me a promo to use TurboNet on my next visit.
I hate to pick up the phone to beg a Plat rep, but it sounds like that might work here.

I feel the same than lensman. Something fails in the communication system about targeted promos. I understand what targeted promos are for and I respect it. I don't feel angry or unsatisfied if I'm not targeted for a particular promo, but I really would like to be sure I am aware of all the promos I am targeted for. Asking in the phone to SPG representatives in my country is not very useful for that, so how can I know which promos I'm targeted for (if any)?

If you are eligible, we will contact you...either by email or direct mail.
If lensman was able to register for something he was never contacted about, it is because we began re-directing members to a "ME TOO" promotion which would allow members to register without throwing off our numbers. The 5 Stay promotion last fall had an identical "ME TOO" offer running concurrently.
OR
He or his spam filter deleted the offer. A lot of people get these offers in their bulk folders and just delete them without looking at them or their spam filter rejects them. Then, they come to Flyertalk, see a url, take a chance and bingo, they register for something they were intended to have in the first place.
There really is no mystery in any of this. :) But, the "ME TOO" offer for Q1 has not yet been released. ;)

This is a good point. Many people get more than 100 E-mails a day, and if you travel alot (like most of us), you can return to 700 E-mails that accumulated in a week.
Also, if you use a Yahoo or Hotmail account, if someone else has received an E-mail from Starwood and click on the "Spam" button, then Yahoo and Hotmail put that address in their Spam filter and start directing other E-mails from that address to the Bulk folder of Hotmail and Yahoo accounts, unfortunately.
Perhaps E-mail is not so reliable a method anymore for alerting people that they can take advantage of a Starwood promotion.

SPG should take a look at how Continental does its promotions. Most of these are pretty lame, BUT, when I log into the OnePass site with my Acct# and Password, I can then go to "Offers". It then lists all offers that I am elligible for, INCLUDING those that are targeted to me specifically. If there are promos out there that I am not elligible for, it will not list them. So long as I check this periodically, I will know what targeted promos I am elligible for.

There is something very wrong with the PROGRAM when loyal customers try to sign up for promotions using the back door.
We put in our 50+ nights, use room service, use HSI, rent movies, eat in the hotel restaurants, etc - give SPG our business -- spend money!!
Granted they may be a few who want something for nothing but that's not most of us. Most of us are Loyal customers. I myself try to stay only in SPG properties. When it's not feasible (SPG has many geographic voids) or a conference prevents it I grumble and stay where I have to.
All we want is to rewarded for our loyalty. And to have to be rewarded by "tricking" a CS Rep is really lousy.
SPG really needs to rethink the purpose of it's Promotion Policy.

What I fear most is not that I'll not get signed up for this (or any) promo, but that I'll automatically get signed up for one I don't want~~ and then be so out of luck, when one is announced that I would like to be part of. This has occured twice to me in the past couple of years, and I only found out I had the 'bad' promo when I went to actually sign up for the desired one, and was told "Sorry, you can only have one, and we've already got you in ... xyz. Oh, you didn't know you were in that one-- well too bad, we can't do anything about that" !!! ???'

I must say, when talking to the folks here in Austin, they're just great. I hope if a "slew" of us do this, they don't decide to "turn off the backdoor" so to speak.
I believe there are two targeted promotions. They signed me up for the Feb to April. Which is good for me.
I don't mind having to call to sign up (Thank goodness for Flyertalk and people posting these 'hidden' opportunities)
I appreciate how great of a customer support phone center they have. They're here in Austin, right across the street from my old facility. Wish I could take them out to lunch La Palapa sometime!
As I wrote in another post, I'm a Starwood Shareholder, so I appreciate that they use Customer Relationship Software or promotions to grow revenue from their customers.
I guess I'm disappointed that I don't get targeted more, but since about 60% of my stays are at Starwood properties, someone in Marketing has done their job so to speak. I'm sure the thought is that by throwing promotions at me won't increase my number of stays, but they're wrong.
I just stayed at the Fairmont at YVR. Had I been able to get triple point and such I would have made the effort to get up early (5 AM), and stay at the Westin downtown.
When I have more points, I stay more often, and usually the "tertiary" expenses even after the room is additional revenue for them (golf, spa, restaurants, etc...)

There isn't necessarily something wrong with the program.
Rather, it's the insanely demanding customers who always want more, more, more, more, more and scream bloody murder every time they don't get every single promo and "goodie" ever offered by every program (whether it would actually benefit them or not). :td:
Seems like every thread discussing a targeted promo sooner or later degenerates into a whinefest. Really, sometimes I think this is WhinerTalk rather than FlyerTalk.

If SPG doesn't want certain customers getting irate because other, seemingly less loyal, customers are perceived as getting rewarded while they are not-- something certainly in keeping with normal human behavior-- then maybe SPG marketing needs to take normal human behavior into account when planning marketing programs. Rather than blaming those annoying customers, maybe SPG Marketing should understand what it if anything it is doing to foster an atmosphere of annoyance, especially in an age when secret targeted promotions are public knowledge.

How come people taking umbrage with Starwood's targeted promotion policy counts as whining but your characterization of us as "insanely demanding" types who "scream bloody murder" does not???

In a nutshell, everyone on FT seems to be a whiner in their own fashion. Some whine because they don't get every promotion that comes down the road, some whine because their points devalue, some whine because people don't search before posting a question, some whine because some whine. FT is still the best resource I have found for getting ahead in the point rat-race even if not being included in some great promotions can be frustrating at times. I do guarantee that FTers earn more points/trip and other benefits than non-Fters and that is what makes this community great IMHO. Okay, I'll stop whining now.

Very well put!
We are in a new day and age. Information flows freely and fast. All of us will know the promos, each and every one of them, from now on. While the glasses of the less loyal are filled with promo's, some (or a lot) of the loyal customers will be holding empty glasses. This board is the perfect place to critique the targeted promo situation. The day of secret offerings is something from our past.
So, let's quit whining about those who whine about promos. It is now a way of life.

Three people have asked in this topic already, but no one has replied:
Is this just for North America, or worldwide?
Thanks in advance for the info.

I was told at the Plat Concierge number: Earn triple Starpoints at any property worldwide that, during the stay, you are earning Starpoints. Pretty decent promo for those targetted.

I registered earlier this week and noticed that the "sweep" just caught my February stays yesterday. I guess the sweep runs on Fridays.
One important point: a stay starting in January and ending in February was not caught by the sweep. I will inquire with SPG as to why the nights in February were not counted...

The sweep did not get my February stay. On to the point "chasing" phase.

I've spent close to $8000 on Starwood properties since January 12th as my S.O. had a seizure and was diagnosed with a Gloiblastoma Multiforme (brain cancer) while we were in PHX and we're currently been in SFO for his second surgery round of neurosurgery in less than a month.
This promotion will be a nice boost towards our dream vacation to Bora Bora but in the bigger picture we're grateful for many other things. :) It's worth a try.
A big thank you to the FT'ers for the post ^ .

I was told by the Platinum CSR that 420 runs from Feb. 1 until the end of APril. Why are others saying March? Did anyone else hear the end of APril?

Yep, I just registered and the CSR said Feb, Mar, and Apr.

Just did it over the phone as I called to confirm my reservation. ^ I have already booked a 3 day stay in Hilton in Seoul. I may choose Westin instead. How many points will I get for the stay? I'm Gold and the room is $258 per night plus tax and fees. Is it 258x3(elite)+258x3(triple)?
For UA's promo, you can call or signup online successfully, but nothing will happen if you are not targeted.

I had to call to cancel a cash and points booking. I thought I'd try my luck and now I'm registered for 420. Woohoo!
For the last poster, I think it'll be (258x2) (base points) + (258x4) (triple points) + (258x1) (SPG elite 50% bonus)

Called to make a change totally unrelated to any promotion and got to talking to rep in Cork. In passing asked about new promotions. Was told they should be coming out around the time of next e-statements - whenever that is. And yes they were targeted.

I'm hesitant to sign up for this promo because you're locking yourself in on a stingy promo* and out of any future and similar promo. I remember that in the last free weekend night promo, people who signed up early had a free weekend every 5 stays whereas those who signed up later got the free weekend night every 3 stays.
*This promo only adds x points to your total points haul where x is the $ amount of your base rate. So the triple reference isn't really tripling your usual points earned, not even close!

I don't believe that's true - you were either selected for the 5 or the 3 night - it had nothing to do with when you registered. iirc, the first report of the promotion was for the 3 night.
*This promo only adds x points to your total points haul where x is the $ amount of your base rate. So the triple reference isn't really tripling your usual points earned, not even close!
Also incorrect - see the initial posts - if your base rate is X, you get the standard 2X points, and 4X from this bonus - resulting in 6X points instead of the usual 2X (hence the term "triple"). If you are PLT, you get the 50% bonus of X, resulting in a total of 7X, or 7/3 your normal points.
I'd hardly refer to this as "stingy". But feel free not to sign up and hope for something better, if you'd like.

The question now is what happens if you signed up for both "triple points" (420) and "10k for 10 stays" (400). Will you get both or one or the other. Who decides?
By the way, to those who already got their "triple points" bonuses, did you sign up as a result of being targetted or called SPG and quoted 420?

"The question now is what happens if you signed up for both "triple points" (420) and "10k for 10 stays" (400). Will you get both or one or the other. Who decides?"
I posted this on another thread somewhere, I was talking to a platinum concierge the other day to make a reservation and this issue came up. Several days earlier I had registered for the 420 promotion over the phone but had not been invited, I just called and gave them the code. On this second call the concierge told me the code triple points code was in my account but that it would eventually be removed (he claimed it "wouldnt stick" whatever that means). I'm not sure if this was the case or not, but since I was going to have 10 stays in the next month the 10/10K offer (for which I was targeted) seemed to be a better deal for me anyway.
I was told that when I registered for that the correct way (via the /promos link) that only that code would be active on my account and that i wouldnt be able to double dip. Too much double dipping is what led to this "crackdown" so i think you'll be lucky if that works for this promo or any future one. I suppose that if i didnt call and ask I might have gotten a few triple points stays, but I think they are clamping down on this now, since we have all been trading codes here. I was told that you will only be able to register online from now on and that they cannot key in codes anymore over the phone. Your mileage may vary for this one if you are registered for both, but I doubt you'll be able to register for 2 again, given the plan to no longer allow phone registration.

Starwood Nut- try going to http://www.spg.com/promo and entering your SPG #. I was not sent any email informing me i had been targeted and after inputing my SPG # was able to register for the 10 nights/10K promotion. There is more discussion of using this link in this thread here http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=401515
It looks like at least some people visited that link only to find they were not targeted for ANY promotion. It looks like this is your only way to register going forward.

I tried calling (I'm a platinum) and the rep said that they were no longer registering people over the phone for the triple points promotion and that people could only register over the web. She gave me the link - I tried it and it didn't work for me (website said "We're sorry; you are not currently eligible for this Starwood Preferred Guest® promotion."). I just had a stay in February and have another one coming up in March. :(
