Las Vegas - Palms too far from the action?

So I'm planning a "during the week trip" in June that will include me, my girlfriend, my parents, two of their friends, and my cousin and her boyfriend. The Palms has a $99 rate that is a lot more attractive than the $180 rate at Caesar's (the only place my parents have ever stayed). I've never stayed at the Palms and am not concerned about how much/less nicer it is, but how far it is from the strip and whether or not my parents and their friends will feel comfortable there. The four of us "younger ones" in the family are in our mid-twenties and I know we'd like it, but will the parents feel comfortable there? Also, everyone but my girlfriend has been to Vegas before, however, I want her first trip to Vegas to be a great experience. On the one hand I want to be on the strip, on the other I know the Palms is a great hotel and the rate is super.

Please advise.

Yes, the Palms is too far from the Strip (and moreover it is suitable for 20-somethings).

The Caesar's price you mention is no bargain, by the way.

Why not try the MGM Grand, Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Monte Carlo, Excalibur, Treasure Island, etc.? Having stayed at Caesar's once is simply no reason to stay there again and miss out on a new lodging experience. Good luck ... and, as they say, bet with you head, not over it.

The rooms at the Palms are great, with high-end bed linens. They have great restaurants and good odds in their games. It's a bit over a mile to the center of the Strip.

Also, the palms is pretty dead during the week...it doesn't liven up until thursday. The Palms isn't a walk to the strip. It's definitely a cab ride.

I would highly recommend the Palms, especially: best slots, best restaurants, overall coolness. If you want to see the Strip, take a cab.

My understanding from my kids' is that Palms, Hardrock and Mandalay have the greatest coolnest quotient. Next is Bellagio.

Since my kids are also 20 something - and at the high end of that. I would suggest you check out the Flamingo. It is usually a good value and is very centrally located. I don't think their casino is as nice for you "youngsters" as the Palms might be, but it will be nice for your parents. The pool will be great. Crowded I'm sure in June but it is huge. I prefer this more centrally located area and the younger part of your group won't mind a cab ride or walking to the tram. Bally's is also a good choice.

We used to stay at the Rio frequently (across the street from the Palms) and did like the off strip area, but the atmosphere there changed to something similar to the Palms and we are not as comfortable there any more. If your parents like Cesaers and a good price comes up for that it would also be a good choice. They do now have a topless pool and an additional shopping area!

It sounds like a nice trip for all of you since there is something in Vegas that everyone can enjoy.

Have fun!

I walked to the Palms from Caesars last year and although I wouldn't do that again, i don't think it's too far from the strip to get the strip feel. but plan on taking a short cab ride to and from the strip.

Thanks for all the FANTASTIC insight! My feeling is that, while it probably caters to a younger crowd and is a bit off the strip, $99 is just too good to pass up. The money we'll save will more than pay for cab fares to/from the strip; however, I'm going to keep my eyes open for a comparable deal, and can always cancel and book elsewhere if something great comes along. Of those that have been to the Palms, any dining preferences?

I really love the Little Buddha Oriental restaurant. They serve a killer $38 lobster tail the size of a Mack truck. But they ruin the place with loud disco ambience on weekends. Ask for a reservation during non-weekend non-late night hours and you will be rewarded.

Hey there,

Actually, I've often found that staying at some of the hotels off of the main Vegas strip is a benefit. Sure, you do lose some "appeal" I suppose, however navigation within the hotel itself is a hell of a lot easier. In addition, with the monorail functioning, you can go to a parking garage not even on the strip...park your car there (or even walk to the station) and then ride down to the strip proper. Takes a giant what, ten minutes?

I stayed at the Las Vegas Hilton last year. I loved having the ability to "get away from the crowd" always on the main Vegas strip when I wanted to, yet not actually leave the Vegas atmosphere. I would say go for it.

The Palms is a great hotel, but if I was going to stay there for the week I'd certainly feel the need to rent a car... or maybe two with the size of group you're considering. Valet is free, self-parking is everywhere... the strip traffic during the week isn't usually that bad, and from the Palms location you can use the back roads to get to many of the casino lots without needing to drive on the strip at all. Depending on your patterns it may end up being close to a wash as to cabs or rentals being cheaper, and it is certainly more liberating to have your own transport available.

You may want to check out cheapovegas.com. It's, well... irreverent would be the charitable term. But their vegas hotel reviews are pretty accurate and should give you a pretty good idea as to your parents and their freinds comfort level with the hotel (I think they'll be fine there, but you surely know them better than I ;)).

Never been to the palms - but everytime I hear of a celebrity sighting from a friend it is from there. If its good enough for them I guess its good enough for me. ^

Stay at the Palms and walk across the street to the Gold Coast and take their free shuttle to the strip. I believe the shuttle runs until midnight. Its free and very convenient. The Palms has an excellent buffet...you'll like the hotel.
