Las Vegas - Vegas with a 10 yr. old
I have never been to Vegas with a kid. My sister & I want to go in March & take my 10 yr. old niece. I know (obviously) that she can't play anything but is she allowed to be in the casino with us if we are playing slots? What exactly are the restrictions & how strongly are they enforced?
Thanks!

Persons under the age of 21 are prohibiting from loitering in any of the gaming areas. At both Circus Circus and Rivera, they have signs that say under 21's must stay on the marked paths in the casino area and keep moving at all times.
Vegas is moving away from the family-oriented approach and toward the over 21 crowd only. If you're planning to be playing, there won't be much for a 10-year-old to do. She would not be allowed to sit there and watch while you play.

I go to Vegas for conventions and take my kids. There is a lot for the kids to do in Vegas, just not in the Casino. I'll take the wife and arrange the grandparents to come also. The wife or grandparents will take the kids while I'm working or gambling and the kids have a great time in Vegas. But if you hope to take the niece with you to gamble (even slots), it's a big no no and is strongly enforced in every hotel I've stayed at.
Some hotels have day care type arrangements but I have never tried them. But basically you or your sister will have to do things with the child while the other one is gambling.
When my son was about 7 we came to Vegas. He found a dime in the back seat of the rental car. When we stopped at the casino near the Hoover Dam for lunch he wanted to put the dime in a machine so that he could win "lots of money". I explained to him about the probability of losing and that he was not old enough to play. On the way out of the diner I told him I'd drop it in a machine for him - and he would most likely lose it. As we walked out staying on the main path to the door we passed a dime machine. I put in just the one coin while he and my husband stayed back in the pathway. We couldn't have been stopped for 30 seconds. Immediately a security guard came up to say they had to keep moving.............he also won $10.00 with just the one dime. Lesson learned?? Probably not.
Kids allowed in casino's - definitely not.
The Orleans hotel has a large kids day care. You could probably call to see what they charge for that. I would not plan on much time to gamble if you take her with you.

Please find a good babysitter. LAS is not a good venue for kids.

You and your sister should play tag-team if you want to gamble. One of you should be with your niece at all times, even while in the room. Don't allow her to be unsupervised even for a minute. Better safe than sorry.
There are lots of things to see and do with a 10-year old - the tigers at the Mirage, sharks at Mandalay Bay, Forum shops at Caesars, wax museums, multiplex movie theaters.

Agree that there's still tons of stuff to do with kids, even after the move away from "family friendly" branding.
Rides: The roller coasters at NY NY, Stratosphere, and the Sahara are great. The Adventuredome and Midway at Circus Circus is also a good time.
Animals: In addition to the aforementioned tigers and sharks, the MGM offers the the Lion Habitat, great if you couple lunch at the Rainforest Café.
Night Sights: Fremont Street Experience, Mirage Volcano, Stratosphere Tower.
Agree with the other posters: bring a babysitter if you want to gamble and keep a responsible adult with her at all times...

Thanks everyone. We would never leave her alone anywhere at anytime. We wouldn't even leave her with a babysitter. I guess we'll just have to tag team gamble which is OK. Maybe I'll atually be able to save some $$$. Great suggestions of things to do--thanks.
