my question, does anyone know if this promotion applies to WT+ travel that doesn't include HKG ? e.g. from LHR to YYZ direct. all the examples on the asiamiles page are either ex HKG or via HKG.

The mileage shown for London-Singapore is what you'd get with a direct flight (6759 * 2 * 1.1 = 14,870) so it seems flights that don't pass through HK are included in the promotion.

I guess it's fairly reasonable to pay some extra $$$ to get more legroom for a long flight and gain enough points for a HKG-BKK return award ticket in economy class (from a HKG-LHR round trip )!
