I'd agree with that advice, but at the moment Dell seems to offer the best value.
For LESS than an ipaq you can get a 624MHz PDA with true VGA resolution, WiFi and Bluetooth.
Bensbargains.com has a deal on it:
Dell Home has the new Dell Axim X50v 624MHz VGA PDA for $499 - automatic 15% off - $40 off $400 code $JMNMXNKWCJ91Z [Exp 1/19, 11:59pm CST, 2500 uses] = $384 with free shipping. [Review1 : Review2]
# Intel Xscale PXA270 624MHz, 3.7" VGA 640x480 Screen, Intel 2700G 16MB Video Chipset
# Integrated 802.11b and Bluetooth, 64MB SDRAM and 128MB Intel StrataFlash ROM
# Integrated CompactFlash Type II and Secure Digital / SDIO Now! / MMC card slots
# Microphone + Speaker, VGA-Out Support, Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition
Check it out here: http://bensbargains.net/cgi-bin/dhs.cgi?5061YR
In every possible way this thing is better than anything HP has at the moment.

I agree with the Dell Axim X50 recommendation. $384 is a good price for the X50v--VGA model.
Even though the VGA screen looked really nice (I saw a VGA iPaq), I couldn't justify the additional expense for my tasks.
I took advantage of an Xmas Dell coupon and got my X50 mid for $299. I have just started using it. The built-in BT and WiFi and dual-CF/SD slots sold me on it.
www.aximsite.com is the best resource for Axim's on the Web with a very lively and helpful user forums.
I thought about the Dell as well but found a great deal on the HP when I was doing some shopping online - about $100 off. Then again, that was last winter and we know how quickly these things change!

Dell. Hands down. HP has lost it's innovative touch.

Well they both have different features so it depends on what you want. Dell has faster processor, CF slot, and VGA screen. HP has a 1.2MP camera. I would not use that feature very often.
I bought a Dell Axim X50 mid so I'm biased towards the X50v. And it looks like you can get the Dell a bit cheaper (after coupons) than the average price for the HP.

Yes, the 4700 has the same resolution as the Dell, but at $250 more. Plus I personally found it to be too big and the trackpad, as nice as it sounds really wasn't very easy to operate.

Dell has a lot of products for their PDA's, possibly even more than HP offers.
Yes, there is a car power cord, what type of GPS do you have?

I'm just starting to look for a PDA. I have six main needs:
1. Ability to sync with Lotus Notes/Domino calendar/schedule for work (email sync with work is not necessary) and pop3/smtp mail from my home domain;
2. A small database program (I want to build a lightweight app for my glucose/weight/exercise tracking);
3. A logging program where I can log transactions and then transfer them to MS Money 2005 when I get home;
4. An ipass client so I can bill wireless connections at participating locations such as many TMobile sites to our work ipass account when appropriate;
5. An ability to hook into the wired internet in a hotel when no wireless is available and I don't feel like lugging my laptop; and
6. When I do my six-week vacation in HKG/SIN/Oz/Nz in eighteen months, to be able to do VOIP using a package such as skype (sp?).
For what I'm looking for does this Axim that's being discussed fit the bill?

The TomTom software will run on the Dell, and even better, it will also run on the high resolution screen.

Actually yes. Because of its dual expansion slots (SD and Compact Flash) you'd be able to get an ethernet card for it, however; it would be a better solution to get a pocket wireless router so you convert hotel wired into wireless. (Like a Dlink pocket router, a real tiny solution).
Picked up an X50v in mid-December. Dell had a lot of trouble getting these things shipped out in a timely fashion, so hopefully that problem has since been solved.
ElmhurstNick, you can indeed get an iPass client (http://www.ipass.com/services/services_ca_ipcinterface.html) for the Pocket PC. Microsoft Money (http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/downloads/money.mspx) is also available.
I'm finally starting to actually explore the many uses of mine and have been pleased so far. If you have any specific questions, let me know.

I am looking into buying a Dell X50v, one of the main uses would be internet browsing in hotel rooms etc. Would it be painfully slow loading web pages or are the screens to small to display pages. As a leisure traveller only, a laptop seems to big to carry around on vacations.

Browsing the web on the x50v is actually VERY nice. With its high-res display you have quite a lot of desktop space to work with. If you are connected through WiFi then browsing is pretty fast, through GPRS or cell is of course still fairly slow...

Thanks Scott, i think i am pretty much sold on one now. Do you know what battery life is like, is a secondary battery a necessity for example on 10 hour flights listening to mp3 and doing work on the pda.

You might manage to get 7 or 8 hours out of it, with Bluetooth and WiFi turned off, perhaps 10 with the screen brightness on very low, but don't expect 10 hours of MP3's as that is pretty battery intensive.
You will likely be needing an external battery source or an extended battery. I am pretty sure that Dell sells a 2200mAh battery for the X50.
