I have a question for you all.
I am a CP and I was planning on a trip to Costa Rica, however of course every seat is booked for award travel.
The tickets are not that expensive to pay for so I was thinking about just buying the tickets.
Do you know if I can still buy the tickets at regular price and bump someone else off the flight? I've never done this and would like to hear from someone who has, or some other tips to secure my flight. What exactly does "guarenteed coach" mean?
Of course, the only time I have right now is around easter so I am flying during peak vacation times.

Thanks in advance!

"Guaranteed coach seating" applies to Y-class tickets only. If the flights are cheap, your best bet are to purchase the tickets (as you said they're relatively cheaper right now) or purchase premium awards.

If they are still selling cheap tickets for the dates you want -- buy them now. If you are talking about the CP Guaranteed Coach Seat 24 hours in advance -- that is only if you purchase a Full Y ticket which I'm sure isn't so cheap....If there is an earlier flight you want to take on the same day you have a ticket and standby is permitted according to the fare rules on your ticket you can do so and as a CP should be at the top of the standby list.

Thanks for the responses, but here is a dumb question:

What is a Y award ticket? I see many letters to designante tickets, but no explanation as to what they are.

Y award tickets are "premium" domestic awards - there's no capacity controls on these. The "standard" domestic awards are from the X fare class.

IIRC I and O are their counterparts for international award tickets.
