Haven't redeemed on US in awhile and figured it was time to start unloading. Can't find anything from DCA or IAD to MSY for any Thursday or Friday in March, April, or May. Is it always this bad?

Many, many people are unloading miles. And there are only so many seats that are released for awards on any particular route. You could always call the DMSC and see if there are other route options and then book it via US Airways. I have found if I am not able to find a solution, I call the DMSC and sometimes they can provide a route that you might be able to take that you had not thought of.

March and April may be especially harder due to Spring Break travel.

FC (50,000 miles) and Y premium awards (50,000 miles) seems like your choice through the web site. As has been mentioned on numerous threads, the Y Premium award is the way to go since it is so flexible and upgradeable. Yet, for such a short trip, I can see why no one would want to spend more than 25,000 miles.
