Does anyone still use a Psion? I want to use an old one, and I would like to pick someone's brains about the best ways to transfer data to a PC; can it be done by the infra-red link and do I need to istall psion's software  Thanks.

Yes and Yes.
You can transfer to the PC through IrDa, but you will need to install the software.
I absolutely loved the series 5 and am disappointed there is nothing like it out nowadays, a real shame that Psion stopped making their own devices :(
There are a few things you'll need to know though; PsiWin only works through Com (serial) ports, so you might need to install the "IRComm" software from Microsoft to create a "virtual com port".
You can download PsiWin here:

Amazingly Expansys still has a smallish Psion store operating here:

And there is a forum for Psion users here, but it's got virtully traffic...

I think PsiWin is probably your best bet via cable.
My main computer when I travel is the Psion netBook (not the netBook Pro). I haven't had to carry a laptop for a couple of years now and I love it.

The netbook was an absolute marvel of technology. Sadly it was also a marvel at least 5 years ahead of its time.
For all it's functions, PsiWin is a total POS, as is even the current mRouter Symbian sync software that contains leftovers of PsiWin.

I generally dump things off the netBook using scp on my MindTerm SSH client :)

Thanks for your replies. I agree with you ScottC - the Psion 5 was/is brilliant for those travelling - although vulnerable to a screen defect. It is a shame that there is nothing to replace it. For the time being I am transferring files on a flash card via a USB flash adapter and using the Psion Convert Files software from Psi Win.
Now if only my Psion could talk to my Blackberry...

I too like the 5MX but PsiWin killed the product in my opinion. It was just too hard to use. Every 6 months I try to do something with mine and give up after a few weeks. It usually comes back to problems with PsiWin. Last time I really wanted to use it just for documents but it is too hard for me to mail them directly from the Psion with my ISP/work set up. So I would have to transfer them to another device to send and that didnt work well. So went my last attempt at resurrecting it.
I just got a Palm Tungsten 5 and a Thinkoutside IR keyboard. I think it is a much better solution.
