I'm trying to save my wife's airline miles acct from expiring. Anyone tried to specify airline acct# of a spouse (same last name, different 1st name) ?

Doesn't work. Generally, they reject if names don't match.

Why couldn't you have the reservation in your wife's name with her FF number, and when you check-in, inform the desk that she's arriving later?

This is a Great idea. HOW do I do reservation in my wife's name thru HHonors website, when our HHonors acct is a mutual acct (which solve the HHonors points destination problem) ? It always automatically puts my name.

The web site just fills in your name by default. You should be able to easily edit the name fields and enter your wife's name in place of your own.

Since she is on the mutual fund, it doesn't matter. Just make it in your name and use her ff number. Add her to the folio if you want, but it shouldn't make a difference, because you have a mutual fund. All that matters is that the FF member's name is on the HH account. (Sometimes this requires a little follow through, but they've always eventually credited for me.)

For reference, to those who don't have a mutual fund (new mutuals were discontinued sometime last year, with old ones grandfathered), it shouldn't work if the HHonors member and the Frequent Flyer member are not the same person.

The best workaround for non-mutualsis to open an individual HHonors account in your spouse's name, book the reservation under her name and HH account with you as an additional guest (spouses stay free), then you check in as described above ("She'll be joining me later.").

Unfortunately with this second account you will end up with orphan HHonors points, but that is slightly less important now that there is no discount for multiple night stays (aside from GLON/P/2).

The fact that you have a mutual account makes a huge difference, as others have pointed out.

Sorry about the advice earlier, but it was accurate based on what we knew at the time. :D

This method works. Change name to that of your wife and enter her FF number instead your number. She gets the airline miles and your mutual account gets the HHonors points and stay credit. Only difference is that she gets the miles. My wife and I use this method when she wants the airline miles. One thing is to make sure you're not signed up to HHonors points instead of the 500 miles option, otherwise neither of you will get any miles.

You can also add your name on the reservation page as the second guest to make sure you have no problem at check-in. With our mutual account we have never had a problem checking in no matter who's name the reservation was in. -- As mentioned above, be sure to change the default airline number to your wife's as well.

You can also change the first name to both of yours, so instead of saying

Mike Cordelli

you make it say

Mike or Anna Cordelli

This way either can check in or whatever.

I allmost always post a note in the comments field that she may be checking in before me and it's never been a problem.

It probably would be way easier ot just sign her account up for idine, and once a year swing by an idine restaurant and you never have to worry about it.

Change the preferred double dipping account number to hers and take all the others out for this stay before checking in to the hotel. as the name on the account is the same it will just credit that ff number. i do this all the time when I need a ff account credited.
Also at checkin make sure the particular account number in on the folio at checkout.

also to book in both names just put 2 in the specific field and name one and name 2 will pop up then print that out as only the first name appears on the confirmation.

This might be the best advice. I recently had a stay, and even though I booked in my name and had my FF # on the folio, somehow Mr. honu was credited the miles (his account is the default one on the profile). In this case I didn't mind because he actually needed the miles more than I, but it bothers me that since we've had a Mutual Fund, my name has disappered from anywhere but my card...

I always double check the folio.

Actually the folio showed the correct info (my AA number), but since our #'s are somewhat similar, I figure that they just went with the default on the account, and posted the 500 miles to Mr. honu. Which was fine at the time. For next time, I'll follow Tinkibelle's advice and have the default FF account be mine.
