i wonder sometimes if anyone makes us of the recent "PROMOTIONS" by asiamiles. for the past year or so they have come up only with utter nonesense. e.g.:
http://www.asiamiles.com/am/1,,83078_114835_eng,00.html
10% bonus miles for a J ticket that costs up to 3 times more than the economy fare ????
http://www.asiamiles.com/am/1,,83078_114849_eng,00.html
1800 bonus miles for a first class ticket? 1000 for a "Y" class ticket that costs 1000 USD?????
is anybody actually going out of their way to earn such expensive miles??
the asiamiles program is growing fast, but their offerings are ever so pointless i think. only every three years or so they come up with something good, it seems ... :p

JAL's domestic J class costs 1,000 JPY surcharge to applicable Y class fare.
Applicable Y class fare includes advanced purchase discount economy fare.
For example, if you purchase TYO-OSA oneway discount Y for 9,600 JPY,
your J class fare is 10,600 JPY.
If you purchase TYO-OSA fullfare Y for 19,100 JPY,
your J class fare is 20,100 JPY.

One of the biggest drawbacks of Asia Miles is the expiration of the Miles within 3 years of when they were earned if not used by then. Many other FF programs do not have this deadline.

better to redeem them before they get devalued in a scheme overall anyway..

you are of course right. the point being that a discounted Y ticket is 1/3 of the price -- but that doesn't earn any asiamiles at all, as I just found out. :D

It's not "J" class , it's class J ! It is nothing like the "superseat" class it replaced. Back to regular programs :D !

OK. My article is a little confusing.
However, booking class of 'class J' service on CRS is still 'J', I think.
If it is wrong, please correct.

Was the old superseat "J" class in the CRS? I never remember ever seeing the class designator other than superseat on the BP ( there is no ticket stock domestically , you always get a card thing that looks like a BP that you just stick in the machine to validate, it has always reminded me of train tickets , now they don't even issue the cards but you just put your CC in the machine and get a BP or just wave your phone over the pad.) I have yet to be able to "map" the fare designators with terms like "hyawari" etc.
BTW, I 'm not wanting to hijack this thread so perhaps we could take this discussion somewhere else?

i thought they were always bad.
similar nonsense were there all the time, like miles for extra lugguage, blahblah...i wonder if the cost fo offering them actually exceeded the liabilities they nulled.

I can't even use the reward that I took (a Sheraton night in Sydney) because my partner's visa got refused. And it's not even possible to have it changed to the Hong Kong one.
Now whatever I'm earning on asia miles is going through points.com to another more deserving program, in my case priority club.

No, in the past, they were not always bad though they were mostly bad. Now they are all bad.
4-5 years ago, there was a promotion whereby you could redeem tickets or upgrades at 50% of required miles.
3-4 years ago, there was a promotion whereby you could redeem tickets or upgrades at 30% of required miles.
2-3 years ago, there was a promotion whereby you could redeem tickets or upgrades at 20% of required miles.
So the decline is obvious.

I think there are fewer/no offers that are worth writing home about.

The only offer I found useful is the redemption of lounge access for people travelling without status. It's great for friends travelling in coach or Business Class to be able to access the Business or First Class sections of CX lounges in HK respectively.

isn't that only for mpc members? or asiamiles members can as well?
But I see no point. 7000 miles for entry to business lounge.
multiply that by 9 and you can a business class to Australia, return. (60,000)
It doesn't take a rocket scientists to find out what's better value.

and get to use the wing/pier once plus a lounge in sydney once :)
and if you redeem tpe-hkg-bkk and stop at hkg for 23 hours, you got to use the wing 4 times!
but i guess there are people who have too many miles to use and too many guest to bring. (in addition to the 1-2 guests the MPO card entitled them to bring)

like many products these days, the lounge voucher is not designed with customers in mind, but for asiamiles: when you have a third guest (which happens a lot ... much of business travel occurs in pairs, you meet another "couple" from another firm ...) the lounge agent has to refuse entry for the fourth person or break the rules. nowadays they just offer you the lounge voucher -- abiding by their own rules and getting rid of miles at the same time.
