I will be in DTW for at least another 6 months and am trying to get some of the 20k bonus (haven't flown paid US yet this year). Any suggestions to maximize bang for the buck? The best I can find are the $138 FL fares. I can only fly between 3:30 pm Friday through Sunday night (or 8:00 am Monday).

I'd post this in the mileage run forum, but it's US specific.

Thanks.

Fly to PHL & then do your roundtrips out of there on the $29 routes.

You can fly to PHL from TOL for RT$98 on AA, NW or CO. 14-day advance purchase required, but valid any day of the week w/o a minimum.

OR to really get bang for your buck, fly to TYS and take advantage of $29 go fares to TPA. You get 2000 miles per flight with a change in Charlotte instead of the 1000 you get on the PHL direct go fares that are the same.

Rarely do you find good fares out of TYS (Thanks fly-i). But a $58 plus tax rt that will garner 2000 miles is pretty incredible.

And to give you an idea of cost comparison, DTW-PHL = $218 at its lowest. DTW-TYS is $138! And that's 2000 miles there and back as well.

So if you really want to maximize miles, head south and do the tys roundtrip coupled with a couple of the FL roundtrips. TYS-TPA = $58 plus tax and TYS-MCO = $78 RT plus tax. And it's 2000 miles per flight.

The only disadvantage is that with the connections, you can't do as many rt's in a day. You can definitely go to tpa and back in a day. However, with the PHL direct flights, more can be done in one day. If that's a consideration, PHL may be a better route for you. But if you're simply looking for a good price and the most miles possible, you should choose the TYS-TPA go fares.

That makes a lot more sense than flying to PHL in my humble opinion.

But you can cram the 5 roundtrips in easier in a weekend if they are only 1 segment each way. You can do 3 roundtrips in a day if they are only 1 segment each way.

It looks like a lot of the new go fares are requiring a one night's stay. That may make these weekend trips hard anyway. I said in my post that it would be harder to do more rt's with connections. That is the primary disadvantage of the tys fares versus the phl fares.

It really all depends on what the op wants to accomplish. If he wants maximum miles, go fares with connections are best. If he wants it all done in a short time, then nonstop go fares are best.

Personally, I'm after the $99 transcons from BOS. It is worth a flight to BOS and a night's stay in SEA and SAN to get maximum miles for such a cheap price. But what I'm going to do will take a lot more time than the OP has.

I just noticed a $199 ($305 after taxes) DTW-CDG on US. That would get me about 27,000 miles (~10,500 status) after the preferred bonus and hyatt bonus. Seems to be a good deal.

DTW to LGA was a good deal last summer....

Thank you all for the advise. I decided to do the GoFares from PHL since I could take care of all 5 RTs in a day and a half. I leave DTW at 7:30 am on Saturday, fly to PHL, then do PHL-RDU-PHL-BDL-PHL-MHT on Saturday. Spend the night in MHT. Start at 7:00 on Sunday and do MHT-PHL-MHT-PHL-DTW. Back at DTW at 4:45 on Sunday. I talked a friend (who'd never flown USAir before) into coming along. We'll each be spending about $470 for the 5 RTs. He'll get 34,000 miles (after the first purchase and other bonuses) and SP. I'll get 35,000 miles (25,000 status).
