I am thrilled to see these $99 rt transcon fares. I can do 4 of them from bos to sea/san plus the one flight to get me to bos. That will qualify me for the 20k anniversary promotion plus rack up at least close to enough miles to get me mid-tier on US.

OR................

I can use the fares to earm Mileage Plus Miles on UA and likely have enough (or very close to enough) miles for low tier status on UA.

The trips cross country gain about 2800 miles each way (a little more via some hubs rather than others). So if I do that 4 times, that's 5600 x 4 or 22,400 miles. Plus I'll earn at least 2000 to get me to BOS.

So you guys can clearly see my dilemma. Lowest Tier on UA or Mid-Tier on US? 49,000 miles (including online booking bonuses) on US or 24,000 miles on UA?

Now, I open this question up to YOU THE EXPERTS! WHAT WOULD YOU DO AND WHY?

To close, I want to say that I love flying US Airways. I think they have wonderful people working in their system. I don't think I've had a really bad experience with them. They did lose my luggage once and destroy a print I'd bought in NYC, but I did get reimbursed. They also rescheduled me after I got sick in transit and rescheduled me again when I got caught behind an accident on the Queensboro Bridge. They've never given me any attitude and have been nothing but helpful. I thoroughly enjoy flying with them and HOPE THEY SURVIVE. So please spare me the US is crap reason because I thoroughly disagree.

I'm trying to be smart in making the most out of these great fares. Elite on either airline is in reach. And both are in bankruptcy. So which will be more valuable to me?

Thanks in advance for your input.

The answer depends on what you preceive to be US' chance of survival (FWIW, I still think that it's high enough that I continue to book with US) and after you've answered that question, which airline's network works best for you. Obviously one of the most important benefits of GP with US is the unlimited upgrades but if you normally do most of your flying on UA metal, then this is irrelevant.

Personally I would go Dividend Miles if I were in your situation.

The miles will be used fairly quickly. Either way, they're going to a trip to Sydney within the next few months. The difference is whether I go first or biz or coach. Naturally, if I get UA miles, coach looks pretty likely (but in E+ with the status).

My flying is mixed -- some UA and some US. It really depends on where I'm going at the moment. I also fly AA. The biggest advantage I can see to status on either UA or US is the ability to book into E+ with UA. The upgrades on US would be nice as well. Having flown E+, though, I can honestly say that it beats the heck out of any other Coach product.

So having status on either carrier is advantageous given the ability to book into E+. I also think US is brilliant for offering such low transcon fares. You have to be able to impress potential clients in order tog et future business from them. I think if some actually fly with US then they will see what a top of the line airline it truly is. Some services are dwindling, but the customer service aspect at US is alive and kicking. And that wins hands down over bitter ATL DL gate agents anyday in my book.

Are there any other's besides BOS-SEA/SAN at $99?

While this may be a pipe dream on my part, even if US was to fold, I would think that someone would greatfully pick up the *gold level DM members.
