The NiMH charger says to use it only with NiMH batteries. Is there a problem using it to charge NiCds?

AllanJ Jan 18, 05, 5:07 pm It may or may not work and the results are unpredictable, possibly explosively so. A significant factor is the amount of current flow (amperes) during charging and in most cases this must taper off as the battery nears full charge. The charger must be matched to the battery. Recharging too slowly (lower current) is not a problem, recharging too fast is. That was overnight in an office corner, they were finding bits of whiteish "gunk" on the walls where it had hit, nasty stuff, I dread to think what would have happened, if anyone had actually been there to get hit. bursa Jan 18, 05, 9:28 pm Oxidation-Reduction (REDOX) reaction for these batteries. Main reaction is Cd => Cd 2+ + 2 e-, hence your current. f during recharging the current is too high, excess oxygen is produced (I think). So then excess cadmium hydroxide (stuff that the Cd2+ becomes) is used up and you can't recharge that much anymore. Then, hydrogen is formed. Bad thing. Another problem is the recharging is an exothermic reaction. With a moderate amount of current, the batteries will get hot...and with hydrogen and current around...ugly things happen and hence your splatter on the wall. NiMH is becoming popular. Me thinks that's because Cd does bad thing to the environment when the batteries are thrown away. |
