Quick question..I did a quick search and didn't find the answer for. As a Gold can I use the companion e-upgrade to upgrade my wife on a flight that I paid for my ticket, but she used miles to book? I travel for business and she wants to come along in March. I've had 95% success upgrading the route I'm on (PHL-SJU) over the past year (about 30 trips) and was wondering if I could get her upgraded if I was on a paid fare.
Looks like good news hit today on the ATSB...I'm excited as I have a ton of travel booked between now and June.

Technically: no.
Real-life: Slim chance but still a possibility. Ask nicely at checkin and at the gate.

You can not upgrade your wife if she is on a standard (30,000 mile) award.

Thanks guys...looks like I will burn the 60,000 miles then instead of 30,000. No way I'd get away with sitting up front and leaving her in the back :)

This is policy but it isn't gospel. I was in the same situation a few months ago. I (GM) was on a paid fare STT-CLT and my wife (no status) was with me on a standard award ticket. I specifically did not request an upgrade since I 'knew' I couldn't upgrade her. At check-in, the agent asked why I hadn't asked for an upgrade for myself + free companion upgrade for her. I looked at her with an 'I guess I forgot' look and we both got upgraded. The plane was not oversold. I suspect the agent didn't know any better, but we weren't complaining. You're probably still better off playing it safe though and shelling out the miles now.
Which flight do you take PHL-SJU? I do either ATL-SJU or PHL-SJU every week and I've only been upgraded once on the way down when I fly through PHL (but I always fly on the A319 southbound). I've been upgraded every time on the way back on the A330 and 767, with empty seats to boot.

as they say technical no , but sometimes it works if not then a true gentleman would take the coach seat and let his bride sit up front! :p

I try to always book on the A330 both ways (flight 1268 south and 98 north). The only time I haven't been upgraded is when a 767 replaced the A330 unexpectantly. I go DCA-PHL-SJU-STX which is a LONG day, so Envoy on the A330 makes things much nicer.

As others have said, technically no, but exceptions are possible.
On a PHL-SJU flight I was occupying most of row 1 with some friends. A US3 friend decided to burn her miles instead and was in coach, far away from us. I asked nicely to a couple of GAs but they didn't upgrade her. I asked to the FA and she said that they couldn't do it. (Half of the front cabin was empty).
I was able to upgrade myself and a US3 companion both on standard awards to Cozumel. LGA-CLT was very full, and at check-in we couldn't get seats together. I asked nicely for new seat assignments and the GA printed new BP in First. CLT-CZM had an empty front cabin (3 people), so I asked nicely and the GA said something stupid about not being able to do same day upgrades to the caribbean. (She didn't even realize that I was on an award ticket...). But as I was boarding she wrote new FC seat numbers on my coach BP. ^
Finally, on a LGA-PHL flight, I really didn't need an upgrade for the 20 minute quickie, but as I was boarding, the GA noticed my US1 boarding pass (and award fare class) and said that since First was empty I could get an upgrade. I went to get a new BP printed but the other GA sent me back in steerage. :td:

I'm sorry in advance for the digression, but I can't possibly resist ;)
If you're paying your wife, you should probably have the option to upgrade her :)

Good One...I didn't even realize how funny that sounds until you mentioned it (I don't think others did either)...LOL
How about this scenario?
As a CP, I booked at 40,000 Y award and was already confirmed in F since it is a Y award.
Can I upgrade a companion since I am on an award ticket?

I have been on 20,000 mile awards and even used free tix before (the ones you get for opting for a later flight when a plane is oversold) and been able to upgrade at the gate if the plane was not full. However, I am flying on an A fare back from LAX to JAX through CLT and have a companion meeting me in CLT from DCA on a free ticket I used for them. Is it possible to upgrade this person since I am in paid first? If so will I be able to clear them 3 days out as a gold preferred?
