We are in the very early planning stages of a trip to NZ, roughly 5 days north island, 10 days south. There are so many things we'd like to do (hiking, kayaking, gardens to see) - but they are widely spread apart. I can find the distances for driving, but several guide books warn me NZ roads are often mountainous and windy, so traffic travels slower than Americans tend to expect.

Is there a website for NZ similar to michelin.com to help me figure out routes and driving times?

AA
North Island (http://aatravel.co.nz/tourist/northisland_travellingtimesdistances.shtml)
South Island (http://aatravel.co.nz/tourist/southisland_travellingtimesdistances.shtml)
Highway reports (current closures) (http://www.aaroadwatch.co.nz/index.html)

Most roads in NZ are single lane each direction. Main highways have passing lanes where-ever practical. State Highway 1 has much more passing lanes than other highways. Motorways (2 to 4 lanes each direction) are limited to near main cities (Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch) only.

In the North Island - expect to encounter small to moderate hills most places. In the South Island the east coast is fairly flat (small hills road to Akaroa, near Kaikoura and north of Dunedin). The west coast has moderate hills with flats in between (also true for inland parts eg Queenstown). Travelling between east and west coast is mountains.

See www.newzealand.com (official NZ tourism website) for ideas on itineraries (and more besides).

Thank you, that AA site has exactly what I needed!

As for the www.newzealand.com site, I think I'll pass on it. Mr SptCA claims I already have enough on the to-do list for 2 months instead of 2 weeks. ;) :p

If you're needing help narrowing down, just post. Eg there may be other places more covenient that are good for kayaking and save some travel time, etc.

Almost forgot. Allow more time at the start and end of main holidays, and at long weekends.

NZ public and school holidays are listed in the NZ key dates thread (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=320780)
