I have two award certificates in my name on SAA, and I would like to use them to purchase on return business class ticket JHB-SYD (SA7700/7701 codeshare on Qantas).

If you can use each award certificate for a one-way trip, I don't see why you can't book one-way JHB-SYD and another award one-way SYD-JHB. I don't remember, if one-way awards are allowed, though! Check with SAA or on www.flysaa.com.
