Cathay Pacific Asia Miles - Op-up stats: which is statistically best flight from HKG to US?

Flying on CX 831 next Sun from JFK-HKG in J. F already full so little hope of op-up. Haven't booked return yet. Am flexible which airport I fly into. What are people's experiences with op ups (from J to F) for different airports? Sounds like late flight to LAX has best chance. Understand that history is not always best predictor of future but gives some kind of idea

I have had 2 J-F op-ups on CX882 HKG-LAX, and 1 J-F op-up on CX 872 HKG-SFO. ^

There is alot of discussion regarding which is the best LAX flight to take here:

http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=378057

The general consensus to come out of it has been that CX 881 was less likely to make a refueling stop. However, I've been trying to book a J class trip to HK for later this week, and 881 has availability while 883 does not (which re-inforces the above theory about 881 being less weight restricted0

So it seems that chances of an op-up perhaps would actually be better on 883? Since it probably goes out more full. Unless of course it gets sold out in all classes in which case there is no room for op-ups.

That said I'm in J so I don't care about an op-up.

Syke,

Who are you to tell others to buy FC or use mileage? Whether or not someone wants to buy F or use their miles is none of your business. Do you even know if that person has $$ to buy first class or adequate miles to claim it? If you don't, then stop attacking other's wishful thinking.

Take a number behind MPC Invitation, Diamond, Gold and then, maybe you.

Thanks for that insightful comment. My inferior brain would have never thought of that. Your post is a true add to the thread

What's the order? How does AA EXP fit in? After MPC Diamond but ahead of MPC Gold?

Well, if both 881 and 883 are equal equipment, that would be the case. However, note that 881 is operated with a 74J (big business class cabin) whereas 883 is operated with a 744 (regular biz cabin), so there are much fewer Y seats on 881. Since the weight distribution/density of the 74J is much less than the 744, one would think it is less weight restricted, but also since it's lighter theoretically.

Anyway, of the times I flew on 881, all seats in the biz cabin was taken, and F (most recent trip 12/17) was packed....with lots of J-F upgraders.....

After my discussion with the Senior Purser about flight on-time performance, it was disclosed to me that 99% of the time 881 would NOT require a fuel stop whilst 883 definitely would......

Actually let me change that order: MPC Invitation , MPC Diamond, Cargo Clan Elite, MPC Gold and then maybe you.

Thank you. It is getting really annoying to see everybody trying to sit in the premium cabins without paying for the privilege.

Me still thinks MPC silver comes ahead of AA EXP.

I think it's only proper that airlines take care of their own elites first, alliance or not. No complaints from me on this front, although admittedly, I was a beneficiary of Cathay's generosity the first time I flew long haul with them (LHR-HKG over Christmas). It made quite a positive impact.

I think it's best not to depend on op-ups for travel pleasures. For every lucky traveller upgraded (including incredulous me), there seem to be a lot more who are not. :p :) Outside of North America, premium classes' exclusivity doesn't seem to have been compromised much.

Cargo business is more important then F flyers for financial reason. The real business in aviation is cargo, not F flyers !?!

Well, yes.. if you're flying F class, then you shouldn't have to worry about being upgraded, do you?

One Diamond member - maybe 30-150k USD a year?

One GM of a freight forwarder - multiply that by 10,20,50,100 depending on size of forwarder. Not that the real business is cargo, but a decision maker in the cargo business can have much more revenue impact than a Diamond

One Diamond member - maybe 30-150k USD a year?I've managed to hold on to Diamond for the last couple of years for less than US$15K per year (of which perhaps half has ended up with CX and the other half with BA and AA).

The cargo fowarder is a competitive one. Especially big orders.
We had one cargo of goods sent via cargo. Sooo expensive.

Then he should go beg for food like you. I was merely implying that the easiest way to get into F is PURCHASING First, or redeeming miles for the upgrade.

If you did think of that, why did you not take FURTHER ACTION?

Different route, but I flew AKL-HKG-LHR yesterday on a paid (discount) business class ticket. Normally, I would have got boarding card for both legs at AKL but the agent told me they had a problem and would telex HKG to meet me at the gate with the card. After a half-empty business class flight to HKG (80% with an empty seat next to them), I arrived in HKG to find the gate-meeters had no record. So I went to W1 Transit desk where they gave me a boarding card with Seat 3A assigned - ie I'd been upgraded to First! (AKL-HKG does not have First, so maybe the problem was the wrong colour blank boarding passes in AKL!). As a BA Gold, but no status on Cathay, I was somewhat surprised, but extermely grateful for the bigger bed, on this 13-hr sector...
