I just checked ITN and CX882 is full in all Y classes and all J classes. There is availability of F4 A4 in first classes.

As I am still lowly MPC green, do you think it would be better for me to change my FF number to my QF Gold number? What are the chances of upgrade do you think? I am currently booked in J-class.

I think the chances are low as if any. They will go to Diamond, then Gold MPC members. If it green, I recon you have no chance. Then again, this topic has been well discuss lately.

Before the holidays, I was on 881 LAX-HKG in F. Up until day of departure the cabin only showed 3 occupied seats (selected) and availability showing F4A4. On day of flight, the F cabin was filled with 12 pax. I noticed the pax manifest that only 2 were EMRD (oneworld Emerald), 1 being myself, the other a gentleman in 3K. The rest are MPO Diamonds and Golds. I also noticed that in the seats that weren't pre-selected (2A, 3DG, 4DG) the pax were all MPO Diamonds and the couple of MPO Golds in 4DG. All classes were filled on this 74J (large biz class plane).

Based on observations, I would speculate that 2A, 3DG, 4DG were op-upped on day of departure from J. Also, 3K was also upped (since 3K was showing unreserved). Of course, there are much more going on than simply correlating unreserved seats before day of departure to op-ups and status. However, it can be concluded that most passengers in the F cabin held at least MPO Gold status, and I thought the number of oneworld emeralds are rather low for this flight........

Of course, YMMV, and good luck to getting op-upped to F! With Caviar back and an occasional bottle of Lynch-Bages 95, it can only be a treat. I would even bluntly ask at the airport counter if they are going to do op-ups. A friend couple with NO STATUS was doing NRT-HKG-BKK, and asked to have paid upgrade to F, but in NRT CX gave them free upgrades to HKG.......that was a treat! You never know..... :)

Lastly....not to put down QF Gold or anything, but oneworld Sapphire status will be highly unlikely to register any "priority" in upgrading in CX's list, it's said that Sapphire even ranks behind MPO Silver in these situations, so DEFINITELY ASK!!!!

I have honestly no idea how CX decides on op upgrades, but I can share this observation on the HKG-YVR flight I was on recently in business. Flight went out with one empty seat in F, so no op upgrades from C to F, but there were definitely quite a few op upgrades from Y to C.

The entire C cabin was full and Y looked pretty full from my walk around, which was consistent with what the CSR told me upon checkin. On boarding, there were several folks that appeared to be in shock when they saw their C seat. Later, when I took a look at the manifest, what I noticed was that there was one other OW Sapphire on the flight, one or two MP Golds and Silvers, two Asia Miles members, as well as at least 3 or 4 CX STAFF sitting in C (also noted on the manifest). I thought they were MP Diamonds, but the purser told me they were staff. EVERYONE else in C (ie more than half of the cabin) had no status whatsoever... Sometimes, I think it is just the luck of the draw (and your check in time) when it comes to op upgrades.

A co-worker of my had no status on ANY airline and was flying CX 889 from YVR-HKG and CX 450 from HKG-TPE.

He was upgraded to J class when he was on a K fare bought from a travel agent in Vancouver just because Y was full. Perhaps he got lucky because there wern't that many MPO members on the flight?

And then I always here stories of my grandmother's elderly friends frequently getting upgraded even though they don't have status.

Well about 8 hours before departure and availability in J class has gone up to 7 now, still nil availability in all Y classes. So probably no chance for op-up for me, but I bet J class is full with Y class pax.

Where do you check this info about how full a CX flight is?

Do a google search on "aow cathay" and you'll find a link to the webpage.

No F upgrade for me, as expected J was totally full, as was the rest of the plane.
