Cathay Pacific Asia Miles - Will JFK-LHR happen anytime?
With HK allowing VS the right to SYD, CX I believe is waiting to be grated LHR-JFK? Or has the BAA granted Rights to CX to operate this flight? If they have the Right, why isn’t it available?
Maybe I’m missing something?
Any Help would be Great :)
This is from a friend of mine who got hired at CX recently. Take it for what it's worth.
"can't get any slots in lhr apparently. they are looking to buy a slot from someone but the cost is in the millions. "

BAA has granted the rights to CX but the EU hasn't. Seems that other airlines are against CX flying this route and they have taken the issue to Brussels. SQ , BD and DL comes to mind, I think.
I think it will be a long while yet before CX actually flies this route. It's not a priority for them.

JFK-LHR-JFK is going be almost entirely Fifth Freedom traffic for them. It will not be much of a revenue making flight as they woulkd have to discount heavily just to fill their seats. Their (possibly) one flight per day in each direction cannot compete with other airlines' 3-6 flights a day. Look at other airlines' 5th Freedom flights ie KU and AI.... they have been relegated as 'cheap' flights in either market.

I agree with GB. The few asian carriers who fly transatlantic routes often heavily discount their fares for that segment. Not only KU & AI, but SQ does this with JFK-FRA-JFK and they used to do the same when they had EWR-AMS-EWR.

Indian carriers enjoy fifth freedom rights on LHR-JFK. Until now, only AI has used them. As Indian private carriers are allowed to fly to UK and US, they will be competing on these routes. Jet Airways (the largest domestic carrier in India) has filed a prospectus for public offering of its stock and will be raising capital and its profile/brand. They have expressed on interest in flying to Europe and on to US. They claim to have found some available slots at LHR. It will probably be 2006 by the time they start competing on this LHR-JFK (or other LHR-US routes). CX has a much superior product but the pricing pressures may not be worth the effort on this sector (especially given that OW partners AA and BA are fairly strong in this market). I think it is just a hedge for now.
