Yes, there is the new seats. They are available on all long hauls, and some shorter flights.

I wish CX had done a SQ and installed an enhanced Y product on this flight. If they had, I would have no qualms on flying to NY from HKG, which I do want to do. The thought of that flight in a cramped CX Y seat is a little too much to bear.

The A340 is also too cramped to be in for such a long flight. Luckily for some of us in the West Coast, we get the 744 option.

Sorry for the inconvenience everybody. :( I shoud have looked harder.
I actually just wanted people's opinion on the flight and whether they found it comfortable, service, seats etc. and if you would rather take a different airline.
Thanks

You're in the CX forum, of course we will root for CX.
To ask this question, you'd have to perhaps ask folks over at the QF forum and see how they'd compare CX's product against QF's.

OK.........fine, then can people share their experiences with this flight??? Service, food, seats? And what the best seating is?
Is that an appropriate question now.

Of course, you're going to listen to the wonderful people here at the CX forum, right?.................. :D Because from QF, you're probably going to get a pro-QF response, while here, we root for CX.
I am a fan of CX's longhaul J product, but never took CX830, only CX829 and CX828.

Hi hktraveller,
Well obviously CX people would root for CX and QF for QF, BUT there is nothing wrong with members having concerns or opinions that their airline maybe in competition with a rival airline.
Ofcourse I usually fly QF but for some routes I would rather SQ or BA as I find their services better. People can still be critical of their airline if they think another airline may be better on certain aspects.
So what I'm asking is that is CX comparable to other airlines for a similar route and if anyone has flown this particular flight, what are the positives and negatives etc.
Just clearing things up. :p
Kind Regards

Yes , I know what you're asking... but the point is that you are not doing your searches on this forum. Anything CX has been discussed before, and if you can just type the word "Service", you'll find pages upon pages on this and scroll until you find something that relates to service in J.

GB, don't be so hard on the guy............
I'm not. But people should really just try and do a search rather than asking the same question over and over again...
"First time on CX.. what to expect?"
"Will my flight have the new Business Class seats?"
"What are they going to serve?"
"Op-ups"
The list goes on and on....
Hope your flight was eventful....

I know, but dismissing their question like that seems a bit mean. :p It would probably be more productive to just answer his question, than directing him to the search engine. I can't really answer his question, since the only longhaul in J I've taken was 828/829.
Yes, I know some people may ask questions repeated over, and over again. But maybe, I'm supporting the guy, since I ask these questions some times, like what the meal is in CX888 in F, use of the lounges, Immigration on 888/889. But I actually searched and didn't find anything related to this. Maybe I'm just a dumb shmuck. :p
But asking about New Business Class seats, well........................ I have no comment. ;)
Sadly, none of my flights are eventful, except for turbulence on 828 recently. I guess dropping my Empower adapter, and saying in a loud voice "sh*t", might be eventful. And I guess scalding my tounge with the soup from that bowl of chicken, mushroom noodles might be another event. :D

Firstly, I do apologize for my 'ignorance' and lack of research with the Business Class seat question.
However, I have been searching for opinions/reccomendations/experiences for the CX830 HKG-JFK trip (on the A340-600 in J) and there is nothing in this forum. I know there is "some" information about J class on CX but I'm asking a specific question about this particular flight. So I believe I still pose a valid question to other FT members.... :)

A possible alternative is Continental, that also flys this direct route. You could do SQ as well, JFK-FRA-SIN-HKG.

Oh my goodness! A thread about CX J JFK-HKG, and so many replies (2 pages!) about how it SHOULD have been asked and answered, and NO concrete information? Hkgtraveller, I agree with you, this makes the CX board look not so good.
I haven't flown the CX nonstop in a while, but I flew the CO nonstop last week (I got a great Z fare, for $1950RT!); the outbound was excellent (one of the best J flights I've taken, better than most CX flights, and much better than NW/UA--great food, personal service, etc), but the return was laughable (no ice for 15 hours flight, terrible food, IFE was for December, though the flight was January 2, while the IFE guide was only for January......also no duty free: the purser was sick and didn't make the flight, didn't give the key to duty free to anyone!). Finally, my "Elite Access"-tagged suitcase was almost last off the plane HKG-EWR, then an hour wait to re-check my bag in EWR; upon arrival in MSP, bag was lost! Yikes......
Even though the outbound on CO was good, I guess I'd go with CX anyway, since their A346 will have better IFE, similar seats--which I'd guess are almost always the newer seats long-haul on CX now, aren't they?

Searching through Trip Reports, I found this:
CX 831 JFK to HKG in J With pictures too..! See Link - note CX J class experience begins with pictures numbered 10-25!
Thought it's not the EXACT flight plan that the OP wanted (HKG-JFK), this is as close as I can find for him.

This is why on board the majority of US carriers, they are so inconsistent with their service that one just keeps wondering if they're going to experience something crappy or something that their going to get their $$$ worth. While flying with CX, there are more consistencies in general that can assure our optimism. :) But EWR is a pleasure and among the list of my favorite airports BTW....just wish CX would use it for one of their 2 NYC flights just like SQ.

CX won't use EWR only because it's not an AA hub, it's Oneworld connections partner.

It all depends on your preference and suitability...
1) Shorter flight: Nonstop (Obviously)
2) Sleepable on planes: Nonstop
3) Trouble sleeping onboard: Stopover (CX888 arrives into JFK at around bed time)
4) Cost saving: Stopover
5) Better aircraft: Nonstop (Newer)
Don't be shy about posting more here in the future should you have further questions. Most of us will try our best to answer them (Although we don't have all the answers to every singles question). We are not here to judge the credibility of the questions asked but to answer them. This is why we have this forum open for discussions. I don't think Guy Betsy was trying to challenge the credibility of your question or anything. If you've read his previous postings, most of them are written in a respectful manner. In fact, I find him to be one of the most knowledgable and helpful contributor to this forum. He's a very experienced traveller and has many things to share with us and I'm sure he'll do the same for you in the future. It just happens that some us tend to misjudge others and become fed up with the same questions being brought up repeatedly.
Although I won't mention specific names, I do agree that there are a few members in this forum and the entire FT community who tend to be nothing but a bunch of jerks. They are the 'I know all' type and their arrogance always appears when they assume others should know what they themselves already know and make other members seem like an idiot for raising the question in the first place and quite often....they just jump to the conclusion without even attempting to see the opposite side's view point.

Is it just me, but I humbly have a feeling that this may also have been raised in numerous threads, including the one GB provided the thread for. Perhaps "search" function is too user-unfriendly, or perhaps some requires computer wit to be successful.
As an outsider's comment, I've read many times *hint hint* that people find non-stop service to be "underserviced" due to lack of elaborate meal service for such long journey. Whereas for non-direct, there is extra meal, as well as crew change, meaning the "refreshed" crew will be serving.
Please, don't challange me on the above info. This is just some of the many comments I have picked up over the past years lurking around here *hint hint again*. I'm sure it will be documented precisely in the old threads that are buried deep within, since all newbies just don't bother to dig them up... maybe?

I do remember this thread that started off with a fairly routine question/topic and spilled over to discuss something TOTALLY different, so 'search' isn't always as easy as it appears.
For example, I'd be willing to bet doing a search on 'nonstop' 'JFK' 'service' would bring up quite a few threads. The problem with limiting a search string to thread title is that, like I said, we tend to deviate quite a bit on this forum depending on prior posts (so say post 5 goes a little off topic, and post 10 goes off that again, by the time we get to post 20 we could be on something completely different).
But for the (continuous) NBC questions I wish a) that people could try the CX seatmaps first (all of which say New Business Class xx seats in them) and b) that the CX webteam would DO THEIR JOB and scotch the 74B from their website info!

Yes, I did mention one name in one of my other post because I was getting tired after reading many posts by the same poster with the same attitude in many forums, not just the CX. But what I meant earlier in this thread is that this time I'm not going to do so and didn't do so in this thread. And yes I agree with you that we don't get many of them in the CX board and that's why I previously said 'A Few' in the earlier reply.
As far as whether a search engine is effective or ineffective, there is no clear cut answer. It depends on how many 'key words' need to be entered to return the desired results. Sometimes when we use them we either don't find anything, found something useful, or the entry returned too many results that we find it too tedious to go through them. Of course there are many other factors as well.

I took the JFK-HKG flight in J 2 months ago. The flight was absolutely great. It ws the first time I took the non-stop (my previous trip was 6 months prior in F on the 747 JFK-YVR-HKG).
Although I prefer the 747, the benfits of a non-stop outweigh the marginal benefits of an additional meal, fresher staff, and roomier aircraft. I hate waking up at 3:00am in YVR, waiting in the plane for new passengers, going through all the mumbo jumbo again with the pre-flight checklist etc. This breaks the trip up too much. I like to get on the aircraft, have dinner, watch a movie, go to sleep and wake up in Hong Kong 15 hours later. It is simply a smoother ordeal. Just my humble opinion!
By the way, the J seat is great, the IFE is outstanding, the service is always great, and it sure beat Continental. I just took Continental in BF to Hawaii last week and it was mediocre at best. Very bland cabin, weak service, horrible IFE, and the seat was just ok.
Enjoy your trip on CX. Always great.

I flew CX888 tonight (I originated in BKK, so could not get to HKG in time for the non-stop) and overheard a flight attendant complaining about the J cabin on the 346. He said that the galley area was far too small to service a 60-seat J cabin and that the FAs are always tripping over each other. It sounds, however, that although the FAs may not like it, passenger service hasn't been adversely affected. Am I correct?

I couldn't notice any difference. It is probably only a staff inconvenience.
