I just got back yesterday from another transpacific trip on CX and took note of a couple of interesting things that CX did on my flights in regard to operational upgrades. I was booked in D class on the CX portions of my trip which was SAN-LAX-HKG-BKK-HKG-LAX-SAN.

On CX883 LAX-HKG on Dec. 24 I noticed a lot of people getting new blue boarding passes at the gate. Originally, only 9 people were booked in J on 883 according to the lounge agent, but I saw at least 10 others getting their new boarding passes. Before each main meal service, the f/a went to each revenue J passenger first to ask their meal preference, and then she went to the passengers that were upgraded. Since I had a paid business ticket, I appreciated the touch and was able to get my first choice. As it was flight 883 we did have our now customary winter fuel stop, however it was in TPE and not ICN which made the process quicker. We got in about the same time as 881, so I was able to make my connection.

Yesterday on CX882 HKG-LAX, I was given an op-up to F at the gate in HKG. Apparently no one was booked in F (which I think is pretty rare on a LAX flight), so we were served the J menu, pre-plated like usual. We did get an F amenity kit but no pjs. The duvets were available, and we still had 2 dedicated flight attendants in our cabin. The cheese course however was served separately on F china with F silverware as was the dessert. I was still very happy with the upgrade as I was able to sleep very well in the F seat. ^

Interesting. You're about the fourth person to mention extremely light F loads on the LAX sector, which makes me wonder whether it really is as rare as seems to be the prevailing belief.

This is also the 3rd longhaul sector that has this semi-op-up business going on, from posts on FT (the other two being FRA, MEL)... personally I disagree with this policy for longhauls and I hope the reason they are seating J pax in F (if empty) is only because they have either overbooked J or Y and need the extra seats.

Don't mind me, I'm still bitter at the three alphanumeric characters "34D" :o

Congratulations on the very interesting 'semi-upgrade' experience. :)
Were you the only one in F then?

There were two other lucky winners as well - they put one on row 1, one in row 2, and me in row 3.

I did have a look back into downstairs J, and every seat was filled. I think Y was very overbooked.

As with every oversold flight on CX, the op-up charade takes a different turn everytime.

Tomorrow's flight CX 889 YVR-HKG, entire economy booked solid. Business more than 9. I booked my seat in economy. MPC agent was actually counting to make sure that I had more than 24 hours prior to departure before they would guarantee me my seat!

But even so, as much as I would like it to be, I am still not guaranteed an op-up .. and wouldn't know about it till I check in at the airport.

Is it 346? If so I'd say you have 99.9% chance of sitting up front with full service.

Even if it's 34C, I'd say you have 99% chance of sitting up front.

If you end up in Y, I'll shout you a drink next time around :D
