US Airways Dividend Miles (Pre-FlightFund Merger) - how is PHL today, 12/26?View Full Version : how is PHL today, 12/26? bofie Dec 26, 04, 3:15 pm Any progress or is it the same stupid BS? TomBascom Dec 26, 04, 3:18 pm FAA ATC Web page reports that EWR is having problems due to weather. TPA, FLL, MCO & SFO are as well. PHL is ok at the moment. JA610 Dec 26, 04, 3:26 pm I understand that US has canceled over 20 flights today so far. US AIRWAYS FAN Dec 26, 04, 3:51 pm I am at DCA right now and it is dead as a door nail here. I am going to be connecting in PHL so I will let you know how it is. I do know this much there is tons of media coverage here. T dukeman Dec 26, 04, 5:13 pm The earlier damage of the weekend is already done.... The local ABC affiliate WPVI (www.wpvi.com) just reported live from PHL and said that things are moving ok today -- lines are not long and flights are going. They showed lots of unhappy people from yesterday and this morning who missed cruise ships and had to cancel vacations, but things seem to be returning to normal. Perhaps if the CLT baggage facility and employees are so good they could replicate it here and transfer a few employees.... Come on now -- it's not that bad. We've even got Krispy Kreme.... :D US AIRWAYS FAN Dec 26, 04, 6:37 pm The time is 1930 and I am here in Philly now in the Envoy Lounge. It is pretty calm in Philly now. There are no delays at the moment and there are no line up of aircraft on the runway right now. I talked to a FA on the flight up from DCA to PHL. We talked a bit about the Chaos if you will. She was about to start crying because she thought that things were starting to look up and then this mess happens. She had to go back to the gallery to get her composure. She said she was sorry for what happened to so many people and that just a few bad apples can make the entire company look bad. She was suppose to have off this Christmas but because there were so many who called in sick. She volunteered to come in and help. She went on to tell me Philly was the worst mistake that CCY could have ever done in making this their focus hub. She said the people of PIT may not be happy with the cuts. But they are smart enough not to slit their own wrists. She wanted me to say that there are many hard working US employees and the few bad apples are hurting the company. She said she wished management would just get rid of them. She said I might be making much less but I really love my job and love the customers that I have served for so many years. After we were done talking I walked away pretty depressed for her and many others who really do care about the customer and US itself. Normally I am very vocal on these boards but after all of this these past few days. I am not really quite sure what to say. T I don't fly US as much now since I moved away from PIT, but your post reinforced other things that I have read this last few days. Why, with all the short comings of PHL with baggage, ability to move aircraft around and between gates, etc--why did US management decide to have PHL as a focus hub over PIT..? PIT is a practically new airport, more spacious, better gate design, better retail facilities, etc, etc.... I wondered why before when it happened that PIT got down sized in the US system, and the events of the past few days just reinforces my belief that PIT should have played a much bigger role in US during re-organization due to the capabilities of its facilities as compared to PHL.... CLTFlyer Dec 26, 04, 9:24 pm US Airways Fan - Thanks for the update and the thoughtful post. I've been flying the last couple of weekends (took Xmas weekend off) and in realizing what the entire company is up against, have tried to wish every US employee I've been in contact with "good luck." They're up against a lot, and this weekend didn't help. But I remember what an agent at the BOS Club said in response to me - "Thanks, and keep flying us. We need your support." I (not to be a cheerleader here) hope they pull through. Why, with all the short comings of PHL with baggage, ability to move aircraft around and between gates, etc--why did US management decide to have PHL as a focus hub over PIT..? Chicagorich: It's simple. PHL has more Origination and Destination traffic than PIT. There's more opportunity (that is before SouthWest arrived) for revenue. However, with WN's arrival, that's changed. Plus, PHL has a facility that has its issues (runways, the alley between B & C getting blocked, delays, etc.). PIT is a great facility - but, with less O&D traffic than PHL, and being relatively close to PHL, it lost out. So, US put its eggs in two baskets: PHL and CLT. We may never know if the plan would have worked out. chicagorich Dec 26, 04, 9:39 pm Chicagorich: It's simple. PHL has more Origination and Destination traffic than PIT. We may never know if the plan would have worked out. Apparently not so simple. I am not sure that I agree that just because PHL is a larger city (more O&D) that makes the decision simple. You can still run direct flights to from PHL to where the majority of PHL flyers go if they are lucrative markets for the airline--those can be tweeked as time goes on and conditions change. A substandard baggage system, crowded gate space, etc, live on forever and it is unlikely that those deficiencies would have ever been corrected, certainly not in time to benefit US as was painfully seen these last few days. DC Mike Dec 26, 04, 9:40 pm Not sure where in the system these problems were coming from, but PHL-headed operations from ALB were a mess late this afternoon. There were flight scheduled for 350p and 6p. As of 5p, the 350p flight hadn't yet arrived from PHL to begin the turn to head back to PHL, and was estimated for a 6p departure - don't know if this happened. The 6p flight, US cancelled the PHL stop, and sent it on the continuation directly to PBI. At that point, they were telling passengers why the flight had been changed, that there simply weren't enough people in PHL to work the change, and that PHL was such a mess that they couldn't send the plane there. Now, looking at the incredible piles of bags still lying around at DCA, and hearing people talk about all the re-routing they'd had to endure, I really have to say that the PHL crew that pulled this off might've managed to put the final nail in the coffin. The tremendous expense of dealing with this disaster might be the sad end to US. We'll hope for the best, because in the end, a few bad apples shouldn't take down the entire company, and because I am convinced that there are many good people out there at US who care a lot, work hard, and are so sad to see this happen. |
