Hello,
Need your advice, we are getting into KL on the 29th of Mar around noon and leaving on the 2nd of April. Can you give me ideas of where to go and things like that? We love to shop, absorb local culture and historical places. People have mentioned Genting highlands, but am not too sure about that. We like amusement parks but am not sure it is worth it to go from the US to Malaysia and spend a day going to one. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
D.

   as a native of KL, I try my best to stay away from Genting Highlands ! The rooms are overpriced and you cant find worse service anywhere in Asia. This hilltop resort caters mainly to local hardcore gamblers (of dodgy characters) with its casino, and to the "less discerning" guests with the many low-end accomodation options.
As much as I would like to promote KL, I have to admit that there isnt much to do in KL for leisure travellers but ofcourse I may be biased. Possible places to visit are KLCC (Twin Towers), Menara KL and Chinatown which are not exactly places of much cultural or historical significance.
On the positive side, KL has the cheapest 5* hotels in the world and plenty of shopping malls for your indulgence !

Sounds like leaving KL for day trips is an option. Maybe a day trip to Malacca? It's not thrilling, but there is an old fort to walk around and there is an excellent toll road that you could take one way, maybe poking along the other way. We found driving a rental car in Malaysia to have its moments, but it was definitely feasible if you don't stress out too easily. Try to avoid getting a locally made car (Proton or, heaven forbid!, Kancil) in favor of something like a Toyota if possible.

A day trip to the Batu Caves perhaps, or a trip to Malacca. There are lots to do around Kuala Lumpur... there's the Islamic Museum which I hear is very nice.
Definitely a trip worth going to is PETALING STREET... in Chinatown. Fakes, knockoffs that are truly worth a second look. Bargain hard...

I second Petaling Street. My wife loves the place. I had to buy another suitcase to bring home all the fake bags she bought last time!

Jalan Petaling and Chinatown in general are worth a visit. Another tourist attraction is the Petronas Towers. Not that exciting, really -- just another tall building. But as a tourist, you are required to go and take a picture or two. Not going would be like not seeing the World Trade Center (before 9/11 obviously) or the Empire State Building while in NYC.
Other typical tourist attractions include Merdeka Square and the Lake Gardens, including visiting the insect museum and taking a boat out on Tasik Perdana. There are also a number of short trips to areas just outside of KL that might be worthwhile, including a side trip to the Batu Caves (as someone else already suggested), Templer Park and Sunway Lagoon (a theme park in PJ).
Although KL is not traditionally considered a "vacation destination," there are some sites worth visiting, and one can have a quite interesting vacation there.
