"Kenya Airways has opened a business class passengers lounge at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport.
The facility is named Simba Premier World Lounge and cost Sh16 million to put up.
Managing Director Titus Naikuni said the lounge would provide passengers in transit "with a haven during their transit, on arrival from long flights or a pleasant place to wait before they board their flights."
Naikuni said the lounge is of similar quality with other lounges in Europe and the Americas.
The lounge is only accessible by invitation and is part of the airline's efforts to improve the image of JKIA and the airline, said Naikuni.
It is part of the efforts to develop JKIA as a regional hub in Africa. With the construction of Simba World Lounge, Kenya Airways and KLM now have three exclusive resting places at JKIA for all categories of its passengers.
"We have an economy class and frequent flyer lounge the later of which we are currently engaged in an effort to upgrade it," said Naikuni.
Transport Minister John Michuki opened the lounge at a ceremony that was also attended by the Kenya Airport Authorities (KAA) Managing Director, George Muhoho.
Michuki said expansion programme for the airport was well on course.
"The uplifting of the airport's standards will enable us gain category one status, meaning that aeroplanes will be able to fly directly to the US from Nairobi," said Michuki."
