Should I be concerned with my checked luggage from LAX to BKK even if I have a 12hr layover in ICN? If so, what can I do about it (given that I cannot change my flight times?) I am currently booked on C, planning to upgrade to J.

I wouldn't be concerned, remember ICN is a major intl airport. I've has many layovers there, even long ones without a problem.

If you are still concerned however, you can check your luggage only to ICN, shlepp it around with you and then re-check it.

Maybe they have a baggage storage place in ICN?

Booked in C, upgrading to J? Do you mean that you are booked in Y? (Remember C and J are both business class).

I can't speak to ICN, but we had about a 56 hour "layover" (read: stopover) in SIN a few years ago and were switching airlines (from SQ to NW). We had been travelling around SE Asia for 5 weeks and had a ton of stuff between what we took over and what we bought during the trip. The agents in HAN (? right code for Hanoi?) were more than happy to check our luggage all the way through. I don't know where it sat for those 56 hours, but it made it home with us no problem.

My understanding is that J is a premium business class (first class seating with business class service). With a C inventory seat, I can be upgraded to J for a fee (<$200).

However, not all the flights from LAX-ICN offer J.

I am now coomfortable that my checked-in luggage will be safe. Thanks for your replies.
