American Express Membership Rewards - keep Ax plat or get SPG?

Ok 1stly this is for a friend. I have the SPG and not the Plat.
Briefly, he doesnt fly with anyone but himself so 2-1 on Biz tkts nothing there, 2-1 on everyday charges (gas,supermarkets,etc) not worth that much in points. His main concern was entrance to the Lounges, I told him if you dont use it on a monthly basis, you could buy a one day pass when you really have to and it can be less than the annual fee. As for SPG IMHO you cant beat the 20000 pts = 25000 miles , nor being able to stay at some great hotels for free or any hotel for free. there is a Cat 1, in the city he would frquent overseas that runs upwards of $160 a night not bad for 2000/3000 pts per night IMHO.
So why if I think and advised him to switch am I presenting this here to my fellow FTers is so that he can see/hear what the community thinks about it, for himself.

Your friend should get the SPG card. More benefits and rewards. A good alternative may be the rewards Gold card.

the plat would only be useful if your friend often stays at the Fine Hotels and Resorts program or was in a major city where Amex plat would get you discounts at restaurants (like Hong Kong). Other than that....just get the SPG or gold card.

The only thing worthwhile about the Platinum card is the Priority Pass for lounge access. Everything else is availble elsewhere for less money or for free.

Sounds like SPG is the way for him to go.
