The Caribbean - Seeking advice on buying food and drink for staying in Virgin Gorda

My wife and I will be staying at a partly self-catering resort (Nail Bay) in Virgin Gorda--that is, we and friends will be cooking for ourselves. Any advice on the availability of seafood, steaks, veggies, booze, etc. on the island and the best place to get them? I know this sounds like a ridiculous question, but we haven't been there previously and a friend who has claims that food prices are outrageous, the island just gets shipments once a week, etc.
Thanks.

There are a few places to get food and water in Spanish Town, but the last time I was there, it was sort of minimal. A place or two even smaller at the Bitter End.
You are going to be out in the middle of nowhere, you might consider car rental for exploring. Taxi was not extremely expensive, but you are staying quite a distance from civilization.
There are major stores in Road Town, Tortola with large selection of food, gormet products, and wine and liquor. These are catering to the charter boat people. Prices are 10-20% more than prices in DC. The big grocery warehouse was on the east side of the harbor, and there is a large grocery store just above the town center, much nearer the ferry stop. Taxi is not terribly expensive.
We usually pack two weeks of meat product in a cooler and bring it from USA. I buy vacuum packed beef, and chicken breasts. Don't really need dry ice, but have used it on occasion.
We charter, and have never stayed on land more than an overnight at the beginning of a cruise. Have anchored in Nail Bay (not much of a bay) frequently.

I'm also a sailor and have primarily done my provisioning on Tortola, but have shopped at Buck's Market at the Virgin Gorda Yacht Harbor and found it to have everything we needed.
These guys are in Tortola, but I thought I've heard they will deliver to other islands, include Virgin Gorda, if you spend a certain amount. In any event, their website will give you an idea of what to expect in terms of prices and what's available. They are a little higher than some other places though.

You can bring in food from the U.S., just not any fresh produce, but I wouldn't bother.
Lastly, here's a link to markets on Virgin Gorda.

While it has been a few years since I have been ti Virgin Gorda, my family and friends have spent over a dozen 3 week self catering holidays on VG. We started going in 1978 when there was almost nothing to buy but chips, booze nad veggies once a week. We got into the habit of bringing most of our food iwth us- quite a task! There is certainly enough to drink on the isald- beer, soft drinks and liquor- Roadtown Wholesale on VG has all tht you will need. We would freeze steaks and chicken breasts and bring cheese and crackers and clementines and almost everything else. Nowadays there must be more available- but the prices will be higher. There is a bakery the yacht harbor- and a grocery store . If you want soem info regarding how to pack food, we had years to perfect the task- feel free to send me a message.

We found everything that we wanted when we were there a few years back. Buck's seemed to have the best selection; Roadtown Wholesale had the best prices (but you had to buy in "bulk"); Rosie's (?) had a decent selection; and there was one other place near the police station IIRC that always seemed to be closed. Prices were not all that outrageous. Post your question in the BVI forum at www.traveltalkonline.com and you'll get an up-to-date answer in no time at all. Enjoy your trip - Virgin Gorda is fabulous.
