Let say the cab driver takes the tunnel to the Monte Carlo and I didn't say anything. What are my options? Should I wait til we unload the bags and tell the cab that you have 3 options.

1. Reduce the fare cuz you were not suppose to take the tunnel without my permission?

2. Tell the cab that I will call the Nevada Taxi Authority while we unloaded?

3. No tip?

I've been to vegas a couple of times but never happened yet.

Write down their information during the trip and get the bellman at the hotel when you arrive to tell you how much it should be from the airport. Then when you've paid the correct rate and gotten all your stuff, you can call the Taxi Authority and report it.

You are almost right. While in the cab, write down the driver's name, license number, and the phone number of the Taxi Authority. Then, after your bags are unloaded and secured, you give the driver the choice of "the ride was free" or you call the Taxi Authority right now.

Several people have reported 100% success rate with the driver choosing the free ride.

Do not, under any circumstances, pay the driver an adjusted rate. That means there's no downside for him to illegally long-haul you.

For someone not too familiar with Vegas and taxi rides to the Monte Carlo, approximately how much more would a ride through the tunnel cost versus the more direct route? Is this a common scam with visitors? Just wondering. :)

I learned the hard way the other night that the fare for the tunnel route is $20. What's the LAS-Monte Carlo fare on surface streets?

Last time in Vegas back in March I stayed at the Excalibur and the taxi was 12.00 with tip from LAs through Paradise and Tropicana.

Gonna be in Vegas again Sat- Tuesday!

Hmmm, sounds as though my driver conned me for $8, I admit sheepishly.

Ya know...I don't feel bad being corrected as "almost right" from QL. :)
