Newsstand - Discovery Wings Channel to become The Military Channel

As of January 10th, the general aviation DISCOVERY WINGS digital TV channel will become THE MILITARY CHANNEL, focusing solely on documentaries and movies about the military. As this channel originates in the DC area, one can pretty much expect it to become a mouthpiece for the Pentagon.

However, for those with an interest in Civil Aviation, one of the last sets of special programs will air this Thursday from 8p to 11p ET, featuring a look at the A380, Luxury Jets, and the final flight of Concorde.

Too bad they never fully developed the potential that exists for some great programming on Commercial Aviation. Aside from the BBC's AIRPORT series, they've only run the occasional documentary on commercial airlines/airliners. There are lots of cockpit videos that condense "flying" from/to various major airport hubs.

Oh well, one more month to catch a couple of good programs...

This is disappointing. :(

And the new channel looks lame. There are already a half dozen other channels showing military stuff all the time anyway. I don't need another. I'd rather have a unique channel.

and, don't forget . . . cnn comes to us from atlanta; so you can just imagine all the "bible belt" programming they will beam our way. sheesh.

by the way, one of the shows on the military channel is "citizen soldier" and in one of the clips one individual was explaining why he went from army guard status to active duty. what's the problem with that [it is a volunteer force so far]?

whether or not i agree with the administration's position on iraq has no impact on the decision that some other citizen made a few years ago.

don't worry, don rumsfeld won't be out of a job.

I'd rather have a unique channel.Based on their current military programming, they have a unique focus on individual warplanes, air forces, and personalities. In the last month, I've tivoed shows on the planes of the Swedish airforce (historical and current), Italian warplanes, and the founders of Consolidated Aircraft and Grumman. None of the other MH channels I have covers these subjects.

But do they really need to switch to a 24 warplane format? Or, if it's not all warplanes, how is it going to be differentiated from the other channels?

when i went to their website today, they had film clips of . . .
the citizen soldier
buffalo soldiers
WWII
so, my guess is that it will be military history in nature. such as civil war, spanish-american war, revolutionary war, french-and-indian war, etc. ad infinitum.

and, who says it needs to be differentiated from the other channels? have you seen how many movie channels there are, for example? yet they still keep cranking them out.

Slightly disappointing.

As a pilot, I have been a fan of wings since I found it in the late 90's. Sure I also love to watch a good military documentary, but the wings channel was unique. It was one of my favorite channels.

I always thought it could have been better, however now that I think about it I would be happy for it to be as it was.

Such a sad thing. I will have to call my contact at Discovery Networks and compalin! I like my commercial aircraft shows. They will be sorely missed.

It will not bring it back, but making contact atleast voices the opinion from the rest of us. Maybe something might come of it in a different format.

When I saw this last week while seeing what was on for the evening I was shocked! While I enjoy military aviation, I mainly watch it for the shows they have on commercial aviation. What am I gonna do??? :(

To me it seemed like they were showing a lot of military aviation anyway. Theres always something like wings over Vietnam on, or something like it. Personally I wanted to see more on general aviation. During the centennial year there seemed to be a lot of that type of show going on. But it dwindled, probably by design since I believe they knew what was coming.

Learning to fly was a good show for me until I realized it was the same thing over and over. It was fun to watch when I was first learning to fly but then it got tedious. I never finished watching the series. Did they ever show her SOLO? Get her PP? I don't know myself.
