We'll be in HKG for both New Year's Eve and Day (Western New Year, not Chinese). I know there's a New Year's Eve Count Down Carnival at Sha Tin Park, but can't figure out if it includes fireworks. Anyone know? Or some other venue?

Also, anyone know of specific hotels or restaurants having special menus or celebrations on New Year's Eve?

I'm assuming most stores will be closed on New Year's Day.

Thanks!

Western New Year is a fairly minor thing in HK. (CHinese NY is the big event)

Certainly no major fireworks (they are on 2nd day of Chinese NY and 1 October).

Lots of western focussed hotels have special menus for 31/12 & 1/1.

All shops will be open on 1/1.

Thanks for the info. We saw the fireworks last year on 1 October, as well as the international musical fireworks competition that was held that week. Fabulous!

If you want sea view, and a little fun, you can try The Excelsior http://www.mandarinoriental.com/hotel/517000001.asp . Cafe on the 1st http://www.mandarinoriental.com/hotel/517000348.asp offers a buffet on Dec 31 and count down with everyone in the cafe. I was there last year, and it was quite fun. Hotel staff handed out party stuff and participated in the count down too!
