American Express Membership Rewards - Add PLAT Card to existing profile on amex.com ?

As the title suggests, I already have a user profile that I use to keep track of my Blue card, my Corporate card and my Membership Rewards. When I use the link to add another card and key in my Plat card number, I get a message saying that I cannot add a Plat card to my profile ???

I called AMEX, and the agent I spoke to said that since my existing userid is linked to my Blue card, which is a credit card, the Plat card, which is a charge card, cannot be added to the same userid. She suggested I create a new userid ONLY for my Plat card. This, after putting me on hold for eons...

Is this really true, or is this only a case of a bad CSR?

I basically have two concerns:

1. Maintaining a different profile only for the Plat card doesn't sound like fun - why not just let me add this card to my existing profile and manage it from there?

2. How does the system keep track of Membership Rewards? I already have plenty of points earned from my Blue and Corporate cards, and I'd obviously like to link the Plat card to the same MR...

Any thoughts appreciated.

I think she's wrong. I've had credit cards and charge cards using the same online ID. However, I did have my charge card first.

On the other hand, you mentioned you already use it to manage your credit card and your corporate card. Isn't your corporate card a charge card? If you can manage that online, you should be able to add your platinum card there too.

Another alternative is to set up a new ID for your platinum cards and put your other cards on that new ID if you want.

Regarding your MR accounts, you need to ask Amex to link them together, which involves a charge.

I have a blue & a plat - had a corp as well when I first got the plat. I think they're wrong. From other issues I've had, I suspect that there is some different info on one of the cards - could be a different SSN, spelling of name, middle initial, whatever.

You're right. My Blue and Corporate cards list my middle initial, while my Plat card doesn't. Is there any way I can add it short of calling AMEX? I'm getting tired of calling...

I believe you'll have to call. The internet support desk may be able to fix the record - don't know about changing the name on the card though.

Just to add my 2 cents to this thread...I just received a Platinum card and added it to my existing profile without any problems. My first card was Blue when I enrolled online to use the bill pay service. Since then I've added a Platinum Optima and a Green Rewards card successfully. Keep after AMEX to fix the problem. Good luck. ^

I got off the phone with AMEX last night, and they couldn't resolve the issue. However, the rep promised that he would forward this issue to "technology support" and that it would be resolved in 24-48 hours.

I logged on today after lunch and tried adding my Plat card, and bingo..!

According to the rep I spoke to yesterday, the missing middle initial in the Plat card was partly the culprit.

As a designer of computer systems I wish I could say "this astonishes me" with such a large company. However, this has already happened with Amex. I asked if my billing cycle could be changed they said they would have to close the account and reissue cards. What a pain and I can't be bothered dealing with it and also for my supplementary card holders (some of whom don’t live at my address).
