Has anyone flying on an award ticket in Business Class been successful in upgrading a companion who is travelling on an upgrade-eligible fare? I have always assumed that both travellers must be using a paid fare and upgrade together, but would my situation prove acceptable? Can't find anything in the small print saying "no".

Yes--on numerous occasions, even when I didn't previously know the person (surpise upgrades to deserving souls I met along the way). As long as you travel on at least one leg together. I upgraded a fellow from Edmonton all the way to Atlanta even though I was only going to Toronto then Ottawa.

I am not sure what the concern is about "upgrade-eligible fare". I presume you mean V fare or higher on AC or the CP equivalent. No problem as certificates are "good for member and one travelling companion".

They would not let me upgrade and companion any fare reward ticket last week though (have been able to before).

I have discovered, however, that they are getting a little more difficult with booking upgrades ahead of time.

My partner is only Prestige, and we are moving next week. He goes all the way to YVR on Wednesday, but I only go to YYZ, and fly on to YVR on the 31st. They upgraded me all the way, and him on the LGA YYZ, but since he is mere Prestige, I will have to finagle the upgrade at the airport.
